I'm in the process of building another rig that i want to network to my main one. i'm still using a sorry a** dial up modem and i really don't think i will be able to get cable or dsl in the near future basically i want to network these together for file sharing (using one with 4 scsi drives for archives) and printer sharing.
both the rigs have onboard lan (k7s5a ecs boards) with windows xp. do i just have to run the cat5 from one lan to the other and then use xp to setup up the rest or do i have to buy a switch. i thought a switch or router was just used to share broadband internet (dsl and the likes) but of course i'm ignorant to this so i could be completly wrong. i've searched around and can't find the answer ,so i figured i would ask. thanks in advance guys and gals.

If its just two computers, you can get an xover cable and connect 'em straight, andy more and you'll need a switch, or hub

If all you plan on doing is file sharing and printer sharing, then save yourself the expense of a switch/hub and just link them together using a crossover cable.
