k, I thought I knew my way around windows xp.....until tonight that is
I sold my old pc to a friend, he has xp pro on it. He has just signed up and had cable broadband installed. When they installed the line etc and game him the modem he never got a installation disk, so I tried to install and configure via a network card (as xp auto installs this and bang..away you go)
this didn't work as you needed the software to activate the connection.
He got his disk today and so I went round to install it for him (he is a novice and only just learning) he wanted usb as he hasn't got a nic. it wouldn't let me as it recognises the nic on the system (to stop ICS!!!!) and cancels the install. The NIC isn't in the machine and it wont let me uninstall it!! tred every way to remove - safe mode, remove pci drivers, task manager then remove (says this file may be required for startup) edited startup through msconfig, done boot logging etc etc
any ideas? (I am giving him the NIC now just to save me doing a format and full install of xp and all his software :) ) this is frustrating the hell out of me
