What does it mean to burn in? i heard it makes your hardware go faster, so i gotta know what it is and how to do it.. (sorry im such a n00b) ;)

burning in is when you run the hardware under complete load for a extended period of time. Good programs for this are Prime95 (cpu), 3DMark2001(vid), and Sandra's memory benchmark. There are others out there, but those are the ones I can think of right now. I'm not sure about the exact science of it, but once a burn in is completed, you may be able to push your overclock.

Another burn in is when you allow the heat sink grease to settle in over a period of 48-72 hours. This is done by running the cpu under complete load for this period (but you should fold and have your cpu doing something all the time anyways :)) Temps may drop a few degrees depending on the type of thermal interface material (grease) you use. Hope this helps.

Prime95, and Quake3 are excellent choices for burning in.

I would'nt recommend 3Dmark2001 unless you had the pre-test screens turned off.

kool thanks.. so its just for overclocking? i dont overclock with my 1600+ because im afraid that i might mess it up... if i burn in for like 14 hours, will my computer run faster? or would i have to overclock something for it to make a difference

What would the pretest screens change?

Also, use Memtest86 to bur in your RAM. I'm pretty sure it does a better job than Sandra.

The only way to make your computer go faster is to overclock or buy a faster cpu. Burning in one of many steps along the overclocking process. When done properly, overclocking should not hurt your processor, maybe shorten its life span by %10-20, but by then you'll be using something like 5 times as fast. Yes memtest86 is a more thourogh burn in for ram, but couldn't think of the name. I believe its a boot disk you have to make and run, it runs outside of the OS.

Burning in for 14 hours is waste of time... do it 24 hours a day for anywhere from 3 days to a week.
Prime95 is prolly the best prog out the for this. During the Burn-in you will usually just have put some thermal grease on and the underload heat will cause it to set in better and faster.

I think DS-Master means the pre-test screens give the computer a rest for a little while which we don't want :)
