I have head phones plugged into directly to the soundcard on my PC.

The problem is the there is only software volume controll and no way to controll the power going to the headphones.

This results in lots of static.

I need to put a variable resistor in between the computer and hte heaphones. This would give me a variable volume controll.

My question is, what size pot would be needed? Or what would be used?

Try this, get your hands on an old cd-rom with volume control and take the pod from there. Or just find an old cd player, walkman or an old table radio. Preferably out of something that uses headphones.

I tried to get one out of a cd-rom but its built onto the board, and I don't wanna wreck the cd-rom, as its still good to use for cd booting old pcs.

Then go radio shack and get a small volume control. They have volume control writen on the package there usually a few bucks. Don't worry about the size they should all work. If not just get a headphones extension with buit in volume control that should solve your problems without having to mess around with your sound card.

Is the sound card an SB Live! series?
There's a volume controling pinout on the card if it is.
