The parts provided don't seem to fit as neatly as I'd like them to. And since I'm here, do I just stick the slk800 on the cpu (with a little thermal grease) ? Do I need one of those shims?

the SLK comes with those metal wire clips. they pop into the screw holes on the fan and actually hold on pretty tight. mine will snap if i undo one clip. if the smartfan has screwholes than the wire clips will work fine.

I actually have the screws in, to keep the metal plate on one side. I guess I'll try it without it.

ok if the fan wires aren't fitting all that well, look at the heatsink, the top holes are for 38mm fans like the vantec tornado, while the hole underneath that is for 25mm fans like the smartfan 2, and the even lower holes are for fans of the 60-70mm sizes, so make sure the wires are in the right holes, that may fix your prob.
