Hi,
Received my repaired Intel ABIT SH6 815e Slot 1 motherboard from the retailer after 3 1/2 months to only find out that my FC-PGA 1Ghz cDo Pentium III is unstable. Computer freezes after 2-5 minutes. Running presently my Celeron 300A at 450 at default voltage.
I was running the 1Ghz at 1.3 with voltage at 1.85 instead of 1.75. Did I ruin the mb & cpu by overclocking? Should I try to reapply the Arctic Alumina to the cpu & Alpha heatsink and give it a try? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I believe my OEM CPU guarantee was 90 days and it has elapsed. Thanking everyone in advance for your replies,

Give it a try!!! I don't think that your chip is unstabel!! Did you monitor your temps at the time the chip got unstable???
These cD0-stepping chips(1,75V standard VCore!) are very hard to cool, that's to say to put the heatsink on, the right way! I had a Celeron 1GHz cD0-stepping chip for a few days and the first time I installed it, the heatsink didn't fully contact the CPU die.
The chip booted into windows, but when I started MBM, I was shocked by the on-die-CPU-termpature of 70°C+. I immediately shut down the system and reseated the heatsink and then everything was fine again.
So, give it a try and make sure,, that te heasink is sitting plane on the CPU die. You could also use these little rubber feet that are included with the Alpha heatsink, to stabilize it on such small CPU cores. BUT, if you do so, also check if te feet aren't too high. I also used a Alpha heatsink in the situation described above. To be exact, it was a FC-PAL6035 which already came with these rubber feet preinstalled. I had to grind them down a bit on some sandpaper, because they were too high and the CPU die didn't make contact with the heatsink-base.
Good luck! I hope I could help you!

Ingo;) :)

hi,
I did not monitor the temp of the CPU when I was having the first signs of trouble because the problem was with starting the computer. It would randomly work after 10 to 15 tries. Finally I brought it to the retailer. While it was working, MBM would register around 43 degrees Celsius. The motherboard was changed, but upon verifying the Asus slocket was OK,thru process of elimination the retailer concluded the CPU was unstable.
Can anyone tell me if I should be using acetone(nail polish remover) to clean the Arctic Alumina off the CPU plug and copper heatsink base?
