I'm getting dsl here soon and was wondering what package I should get from my provider. I can get 256k/256k for $50 or 256k/1.54mb for $66. Is it worth it for the more speed? Will there be a noticable difference? Also the 2 modem routers they offer are the zyxel 642 for $350 or the Pairgain 500L for $690. What is the difference between these two. Do I need the Pairgain for the faster speeds of the 1.54mb? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Kent

Are you geting DSL, ADSL, or IDSL? Who is your provider, see DSL reports (www.dslreports.com) for more information and alternative providers.
I have Sprint ADSL, 1.5/384 for about $55 per month. I am using the zyxel 645 bridge hooked to my firewall, and I am 12,650 feet from my CO (which required conditioning on my phone line). DSL should run as far as 15,000, but any distance over 12,000 feet is going to require a survey.
The bridge had an instant rebate, so it was free.
for 16 bucks the 1.5 down is preferable, but I would look at bumping your upload speed.
Really it depends on your usage and finances, I tend to send alot of data (to clients) so a higher upload speed was important, whereas for just surfing, a high download speed is real nice.

yeah, but for common usage no need to up the up (lol up the up) unless your like in pauldrivers case where-as the extra upload is needed.

get the 1.5 down, you'll appreciate it in the long run.
also, DONT PAY THAT MUCH FOR ONE OF THEIR ROUTERS.
you can get a little 70$ Linksys, and it will do everything you need it to do, for a hell of a lot less $$. you dont need their router, a router is a router. thats robbery

Which DSL are you talking about? If you need more speed, go for it.
I have 1mbit down 128kbit up for $35/mo. I could have 2mbit down 256kbit up for $43, but I don't need 2mbit, even though extra $8 doesn't sound much. You'll have to decide for yourself :)
$350 for a router  Thats way too expensive. I'd never pay more than $100 :p But then again my ISP allows two users with the same username to login and they both get different IPs for no extra fee, so I don't really need one (yet :p).

Don't you need to get there router so it is configured to thier settings? Also do I need anything extra like a better or special router or something to get the 1.5mb download? Why is the pairgian 500L so expensive relative to the zyxel?
thanks,

by the way, both are modem/routers, so you don't have to get a modem also.
