View Full Version : Help! Do-it-yourself firewire HDD
I posted this elsewhere with no response. It seems like a storage thing, so here it is again:
Help!
OK, so there's one of those external firewire notebook enclosures here (http://www.superpcparts.com/item.jsp?itemID=2083) .
Has anyone ever used one? Is this a good deal? Where can I find a cheap notebook drive (~6gb?) to go in this thing?
I'm mainly interested in transporting my digital video among a few computers.
Thanks!

I don't have an answer, but I'm topping this, because forum-diving for old threads isn't popular in Storage.
thanks. I know SOMEBODY out there has used one of these things. It's just cool to be able to carry around a hard drive in your shirt pocket and plug it in and go.

That thing is really cool. I want one!
I've got 2 Firewire and 2 USB 2.0 HDDs, all using 2.5" HDDs, and they are great products. The downside is that the drives can get expensive very rapidly, especially for larger sizes. I have MS DOS and PC DOS drivers for the USBs so they can be used with imaging software. Portable Ghost/Drive Image drives make working on friends and families computers much easier.
The price on the enclosure is not bad.
As far as cheap drives go, look at pricewatch under notebook drives. I wouldn't go with a 6GB since the majority are IBM DBCA drives which are 4 generations old. Search for 10GB under DJSA(still 3 generations old, but faster and more reliable). It'll be about 10.00 more expensive than the 6GBs and a much better drive.
