Are the lite on ones good? They seem to be pretty cheap.
What's the difference between the 163 and 165 model?

I have used the lite ons before and they work great. I'm not sure the difference between 163 and 165 since the one i got was a rebadged. If i had to guess, i would say that the 165 is newer or has some new fetures. But don't quote me on that.
I got mine about 4 months ago. It's a 163, so I'd guess the 165 IS the newer model.
Look here (http://www.jlms.com.tw/jlms.htm)
XJ-HD165H
DVD 16X / CD 48X E-IDE DVD-Multi ®, DVD-ROM, SMART-X, ABS mechanism
XJ-HD163D
DVD 16X / CD 48X E-IDE DVD-ROM, SMART-X, ABS mechanism
From what their website says, the 165 has this:
"Conform to DVD-Multi Standard, Access all CD Family & DVD Family Media"
WTF? Sounds like a good thing to have, when all other things are equal. Go for the 165.
They are good, but not excellent!
Try Pioneer or Toshiba.

the new Lite-on are better for pioneer. Toshiba are probably the best all round.
How are they better? I mean, I've used quite a few drives, and as long as they don't eat up clock cycles, sound like a plane taking off, extract an MP3s like crap, or break... What's the big difference?

the pioneer is a slow ripper and its also more expensive than the lite-on and toshiba and it won't read any protected audio cds, neither does it support raw+96 reading, although the pioneer has a neat slot-in mechanism.

Go with the Toshiba . Have had my Toshibs 16X for awhile now and its been FLAWLESS in all respects . I play alot of movies, music and use it as my cd-reader for direct burning ; and I have NOT one complaint about this drive ! My .02 ;)
... but be ready to find no sound-out on the dvd panel.
