View Full Version : why is my dsl slow
I just got DSL today do get me wrong its faster than dial up way faster. However its not as fast as I had thought nor does it test as fast as my ISP claims. On their website they claim 256kbs d/l 128u/l yeah thats slow too. But I clocked my download on download.com and it said 100k thats 20x better than the 5k I could muster before but still I NEED MORE BANDWIDTH!!!!!!!!!!! I still can't stream radio in winamp without some skips.
So my question is should I complain to my ISP or is this normal to have about this speed oh btw the CO is a block from my house, they just barried new lines about a year ago. I am one of two people in my town that have dsl. (I live in really small town USA theres maybe 20 that live in the city limits and then another 60 that live all spread out.
So is my ISP cheating me by not giving me my bandwidth or what?
thanks

usually your actual speeds are less than whats advertised, and some tests are more accurate than others, check www.dslreports.com for a second opinion
i just fired up a utility that came with my msi mobo called i-speeder and its goes second by second of data rates and its doing about 225k so i guess its all good.
i am really liking this broadband already though don't know why i waited so long. oh yeah its kinda spendy but oh so nice
I went through the same thing, I got DSL about 3 weeks ago in my APT. At home I would get around 1.2 Mbit while here I only got 160K/B sec. I was disapointed, and then I read in one of the papers included with my package that I should leave my modem on for 10 days while they optimize my conection. Well I don't know if it was B.S. or not, but about 6 days later I averaged around 350K/B sec. So maybe thats what happened to you.
hmm interesting but really i wouldn't doubt it either thanks for the input im finding some tweaks right now although i don't think its getting much faster.

it could also depend on the connection in your area...how many people in your area has DSL... and the time of day you are on....
Back in school our phone company got DSL and only had 1 T3 line tring to supply a college town with DSL...I lived within rock throwing distance of the HOP but still had one of the slowest connection in town...you could possibly complain to the provider if it doesnt' increase within a week or two...all they might do is give you a free month or something similar.
yeah theres something like 2 people with dsl on the CO and maybe 5 more with dial up i think that the fonecompany just has a crapy uplink in their CO so there is no chance for my dsl to stretch its legs
alllwell i will prolly complain in a week or two
thanks

Why turn off the modem? Thats one of the benefits of DSL...always on??

I believe you are thinking of cable, not dsl. Dsl isn't based on shared bandwidth like cable, though even with cable you really aren't going to find a noticable hit in performance unless everyone and their cousin is online and downloading 400+Meg files at the same time:D
Most slowdowns are just regular net congestion.

Are you sure that you don't have too much crap running in the background?

So true, that's why when I get my dual pIII server up and running it's going to be pure Linux:D

No, but thanks, I picked up an Acorp 6A815EPD cheap at a computer show in town. I have memory, a PSU, a CD-RW, an old monitor. So basically I still need a case, cpus and heatsink/fans, 10-20G HD, a second network card (I want all internet traffic [I have kids] routed through the server) and a hub. I figure about 2-3 weeks before I can gather the parts I need and get it up.:D
Of course thanks to Murphy's Law it'll probably be 2-3 months
At least I get to learn server linux and networking from the ground up.
