View Full Version : [SOLVED] Cheapest working HSF?

I am contemplating buying an AMD setup for my main system, I would like to know what HSF would keep a T-bird 1.33 cool, long enough for me to get a water system up and running. (probably a few months)
As I probably won't be re-using the HSF I don't want to spend a fortune, but at the same time I don't want a fried chip.

the FOP 32 is cheap and still one of the best.

I was just reading a post that was stating a 6035 was barely acceptable isn't the 6035 a better HSF than the FOP32?

It was when we were using 50W processors. I'd say they are real close in performance. It seems to me that if you're going to dump around $200.00 on a CPU, that you would want to get a decent HSF to protect your investment. A good HSF will outlive several evolutions of CPUs. Think about it. If you still want to go cheap, get the Vantec FCE-62540D w/38cfm Delta fan at KD Computers. $17.00 + $4.50 S/H.

Get a GW WBK38 for about $24. It is a modern, wide hs that comes with the expensive 6800rpm delta fan (typically $10 alone) and it also allows installation of a more silent 80mm fan by using a grill.

The latter combination dropped temps on my system from 43C with PAL6035(which I love btw for up to a GHz system) and 27CFM fan to 40C at the same or lower noise level.

I'm not trying to be cheap I just don't see a lot a point in spending extra money when the water comes along it will sit in the draw.
the WBK looks appealing or is it woth spending the extra on the CAK?

The CAK would probably be your best bet if you plan to overclock while you're waiting for the H2O setup.
