ok, i'm on my second wd400bb, 40gb 7200 rpm ata 100 drive. the first one lasted about a month, it started making a nifty little clicking sound, and was dead within a week, this morning, i noticed the drive wich i recieved as an rma about 2 mos ago making the same clicking noise, it will click, then the system will hang for a sec, another click and alls well for a few more minutes. for curiousity i went to wd site and dug through the forums there, seems this is a wide spread problem with the ab/bb series wd drives. no comment from any wd rep. well, at least no usefull comments. i wanted to see if anyone here had experienced the same problem. seems the drives will start clicking, causing massive slowdown's, then shortly after will die, so i guess i'm waiting for this one to go out. then i'll be waiting for another rma (took me 2 months to get the first rma :( )

i've always used wd since way back in the day when a 1gig hdd was huge. now it seems, with no response from wd about this seemingly common problem, i'll be lookin for a different hdd manufacturer. maxtor ok? seagate? ibm? recomendations?

Now, before you go tossing WD out the window, open up your case and put a fan or some form of ventilation on your HDD. Could be the platters are getting too hot, and are expanding *just* enough to throw the heads off the tracks.

I've had pretty good luck with everyone except IBM, of whom I've never bought a hard disk from. I have a 512MB Seagate running 24/7 in the other room, very reliable. The Maxtor 40GB I have and the Maxtor 20GB in my dad's machine have never given either of us problems, and the WD G6B I have seems to be behaving.

There really is no best choice when it comes to hard drives, everyone has screwed up at least once. If I had to recommend only one drive manufacturer, though, it'd be Maxtor.

yeah, i was planning raid soon, was going to get one new drive anyhow, guess instead of one wd i'll be getting 2 maxtors.

what got me was how disconcerting this thread was. so many folks with the same clicking issue, followed by a dead drive. one supposed "wd tech"s only reply was... "drives die get over it" most of these peoples drives were either a couple weeks or a couple months old.
