I need a new graphics card...I will settle for a TI4200 as it is the best bang for bucks, but what I really want to know is....Outside of benchmarking will I see a noticable difference in the graphics quality or overall game smoothness between the 64 MB and 128 MB versions of the various cards?

Baring in mind this card will probably only last me twelve months or so, what do you think guys?

The system is in the sig, I am planning on +256 MB of the same RAM at the same time as the card upgrade.

Over to you....

if you are only using it for a year it shouldnt make much of a difference

well Ut2k3 Recommended is 32- 128 mb video card Doom 3 will defently be 128 or more so get the 128 mb version thier slightly slower than the 64 mb version but you can always o/c it

Doom3 will be 64 or more....if they say 128 the sales would dip majorly......and it wont be that big of a difference....maybe 10-15% at most.....if they are the same price i would get the 128 if 128 is 20$ more id have to think about it.....

I got UT2003 I ran the bench on my current system and it was a bit jerky. I can run the game at all maxed settings and it runs aswell as my mate P3 933 w/ TI 4400 and 384MB PC133. But obviously not at as high a resolution. I'll attach the results just for reference.

I am not looking to break b/marking records I just want a card that will hold it's own for a year or so. (it would be nice to get 10K+ 3dmarks tho)

thats a terrible score sorry but it is you will have very bad problems playin ut2k3. i suggest getting s ti 4200 or higher 128 meg

Yea so what they 64 mb-128 but you know as well as i that 256 meg cards are comming and that games will follow shortly

64 meg card on Doom3 will be like the minimum lol

Like I said it runs well enough to play at full detail and not get on my nerves to much. But I am looking at only about 1400 3DMarks aswell so I know it is the weakest link.

I am thinking either a gainward GS or Albatron (which everyone seems to be raving about) ti 4200with 128MB might even stretch to a ti 4400 if I can get one for like +£20-30. The next gen Nvidia are just around the corner tho so I think timing is crucial when buying.

get the albatron 4200...i dont think a ti4400 is worth it...and your system is far superior to a PIII933....you should get around 80-90fps botmatch in that same 800x600 UT2003

I would go for the 128MB card if you can afford it, after all....why not? It can only help in this senario so go for it!

I just bought NOLF 2 and during the install it said that they recommend a 128mb card. I turned all the eyecandy options to max and kept the resolution at 1024 x 768 at 32bits. I have experienced absolutely no lag whatsoever. The game looks spectacular.

That said, I think the 64 meg card is getting dated and will probably need to be upgraded in the next 6 to 12 months to be able to play everything with all eye candy options and best appearance. With your CPU and system config you could get by with the 64 meg card for a while but it will definately bottleneck on upcoming games. I think I will be upgrading cpu and vgu in the next 4 to 6 months so I can play the new DOOM single player.

I made a weird observation. Before I had my new system, I had a nasty old Presario with a Jaton TNT2 32MB PCI card in it. The Jaton PCI card was SHARPER on both my 21" Hitachi CM828 and my 17" Optiquest monitors than my new Gainward Ti4400 with 128MB of VRAM. I don't know why, but it was a small but noticeable difference in favor of the Jaton card. Obviously it would not win any benchmark tests, but it was good on the eyes.

Cracking link very comprehensive review on this subject thanks!!

right this the choice: the albatron TI4200 128MB 3.3ns...£165
Gainward GS TI4200 128MB ultra....£172
ASUS TI4400 128MB........................£177

only 12 quid more for the ASUS TI4400 including delivery.

What do you recon? I am bound to be able to O/c the ASUS to 4600 standards...What about the albatron tho...that is FAST memory for a 128 card!! I could problem get more out of it esp if I get RAM sinks for it. Thoughts people?

only 12 dollars more.. unless i am so wrong.. ive not follow up stuff about the new video cards so im not sure if there is any new revision of the chips, otherwise the 4400 is sure the best deal.

pounds mate, pounds. I'm over the pond! 12 pounds is about 10 bucks (I think). A friend of mine has the ASUS but doesn't O/c. I haven't really looked at any reviews but he is happy with it.

He is running a soc A t-bird 1 gig w/ 128 SD on a fudjitsu siemens rig, so I know I can expect so groovy results with my set up.

take a look at some reviews here (http://www.8dimensional.com/nVGF4Ti.html) and here (http://www.neoseeker.com/Hardware/Products/asus_geforce4_ti4400/index.html).

get a 128 ddr card better buy over 64, ATI 128 cards come with the same speed ram as the 64 cards, 3.6 BGA like mine :)
