View Full Version : Power Supply Get's Loud Sometimes
I've got a 300w generic PSU. Recently though, ever since I've up'ed my overclock to 1588MHz (143fsb*11), if I stress it enough, it'll BSOD and reboot. When I don't stress it enough, generally when I'm doing computer stuff, I can hear the PS get louder and then tone down after awhile. This occurs on a regular basis. I've since dropped my overclock down a notch to 142fsb*11 and it will still do that. Is my PSU getting stressed out? Is it dying?
By the way, my +5v dips as low as 4.84 under stress, but usually resides at 4.9. Should be no problem?

I'm curious, is it some sort of hum, a rattling noise, or fan noise?
Regardless, it is holding back your overclock, which ought to be enough reason to buy a better one. It'll be money well spent. 4.84 is trouble territory.

my old AT powersupply used to do that, it was the fan, and finally one day there was a BIG BOOM, and the fan stopped working, and shortly there after the whole PSU was gone.
You can remove the psu and check to see if it's the fan. I just changed the fan on my PSU from an Adda to a silent Panaflo and it did wonders. Air flow is not that much different but the noise sure is. Just be careful not to electrocute yourself remember you're dealing with 120 or 240 Volts not the usual 12V the power supplies output.
