Ok. Started noticing this problem the other day. Was playing Deus Ex (can be quite addicting) at 800x600 32bit and after about 2 1/2 hours the game suddenly closes, for no reason. The computer doesn't freeze/hang/ restart. When I go to re open the game it's fine. I have a Radeon AIW 8500DV, is this just a glitch in the game, or is the card overheating?

It's not a big issue, just kind of annoying.

MSN and ICQ don't cause it, I know that. There's specific event that really causes it to happen.... And I've replayed the parts of the game that it happened during with no problem... So this is why I'm curious about the overheating.

I used to have an 8500 in a mini-mid Pavilion case (yeah, I know--I got a good deal on it--it's someone else's problem now) and had a similar problem. YES it was the video card overheating. I ended up rigging a 60cm fan to blow on it.

Actually my nic had a hole in the upper righthand corner, so I put a zip tie (or something) through that and through one of the holes in the fan's corner. Then plugged it in and never had another problem.

I'm pretty disappointed in my 8500. I keep having driver issues with the thing in almost every game I play. Little things in almost every title, like artifacts--playable but annoying. In NOLF2 there's an issue with the cursor going all artifactie. But in Icewind Dale II--lockup after 10 minutes of play unless you roll back to ancient drivers.

OK. I feel better now. Thanks for starting this thread!

I'd have to agree, it's a fantastic card with great potential, but the drivers... ugh... I'd rather have my teeth pulled than deal with them at times... (Hence the reason I've yet to upgrade to the newest ones out...)

Which makes me wonder if people from hardware companies actually read the gripes/compaints we put up here and try to make better products.

They probably do, but:
1: Look at how many boards and threads they have to wade through.
2: Look at how fast new hardware configurations are coming out.
3: Look at how FAST new games are coming out.
4: Look at how long it takes to code new drivers.

Some companies are better than others at keeping up with the bleeding edge, but none of them have it easy.:(
