I just replaced my horrible generic 400w psu with a nice antec 350w. When I pulled the old one out I smelled inside it and it had a burned electronics smell. The psu still worked I just replaced it because I was having problems. So was my psu half burned or shorted out or something?

maybe you were lucky and it was just on its way out all though i think you would of noticed if it was.

Yeah, that smell you got a whif of was your PSU about to fry. Although sometime PSUs carry that smell from time to time, in my expierience when you smell that out of a PSU and it isn't brand new...it's time for a new one...good call.

I had a psu that started doing that. It conked out after about 5min. Im stuck with a compaq 250w psu that can only run half my stuff untill i can afford a new one.

Could also be dust on the parts of the PSU that heat up. Usually the first sign of a failing PSU is when your computer won't start!

Sometimes I would crash in games and stuff Im almost sure it was the psu. The combined 3.3v and 5v were 180 I think On a 400w psu.
