you can use an IE windows to connect to the XP box but it will install software automatically wheather you like it or not unless you have terminal services on it. All you need to do is type in your IP address and /tsweb to access it.

Copy these files from XP to a floppy:
mstsc.exe
mstscax.dll
Run the executable from the floppy and you'll have everything you need to connect to your home box. It won't install anything on the local machine

I forget which one it is... it's one of these two:

what did those files let you do?
you could set up a VPN, but that wouldn't give you remote desktop, just remote access to your network.

That is the terminal services client, the program that you need to use in order to connect to terminal services. (besides web-based tsweb).
A VPN would work, but there is really no need for it, as he can modify his firewall to direct incomming connections.
