I´m in need of a app that slows down my harddrive, a IBM micro... I cant use the IBM fitness tool or that other app, because it need to boot on a stupid floppy (welcome to the 21st centrury...)....

any ideas of other apps that does the same as IBMs ?

What do you mean by "slow down"? As in, spin slower or transfer data slower?

Slowing down the RPM is not possible, it'd screw up drive geometry.

Hmm... But how does the aam-tools work (and other stuff ibm have) then? how do they make a disk quiet, without slowing down the rpm?

They don't slow down the RPM, I believe they up the seek-times by a few MS so that the head doesn't move around so fast.

Rushdie, this may not be the best place to ask and i apologise to any admins, but could you please remove the
'Better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven'
from your sig because it is quite offensive to some people.

Thank you

R3V3L4710N: Nope, I wouldn't. Offensive? You must be kidding... By the way, it's "...serve in heaven" not "...serve in hell".

Topic: Well, that wasn't so good, because the noice of the drive is due to its rotation, not when seeking... A squealing sort of noice...

Well, okay... I won't be there to defend you from the sig Nazis when they come knocking on your door, though. :)

As for the HDD noise - the heads moving back and forth make noise as well, and acoustical management slows them to down to make them quieter. Spinning the disk slower is just not possible, unless you want to spend time and money adjusting/replacing the PCB, and low-level formatting the thing OEM-from-the-factory style.

Haha... (dont know where the nazis' comes inte it...but ok :p)

Ah, replacing pcb and zero-yadayada-formatting could be a nice project...but no, not on my laptop :p

Well, I just have to drop it to get a new one from guarantee :)

If it's the normal operation noise, just sell it and go buy a new one. If it's getting louder and louder, then a bearing could be crapping out. Better hope it doesn't sieze up...
