hi guys..

would really appreciate a speedy response, as i need to decide what to do about this first thing in the morn...

basically, had this computer set up for a few weeks and take the heatsink off one day to apply some artic silver...

thing is, since then it just won't post at all!!

the system turns on, power comes through, fans start spinning, as does the hard disk, but there are no beeps at all.

i've tried everything from resetting the cmos to changing the graphics card and memory!

i've now narried it down to either the cpu or the motherboard, but need to decide which it is asap so i can get a replacement soon.

in case you're wondering, i can't find another cpu to test and nor do i have a spare motherboard laying around.

it's an abit bd7-II and p4 2.4b set up and like i said, has been running for a couple of weeks.

any ideas??? i'm thinking it has to be the motherboard, if it was the cpu it would beep wouldn't it??

cheers,

zahid

unplug the computer and reset the cmos for 10 mins or so.

Remove the cpu and reseat the cooler.

Sounds like you've done just about everything.

You could ask your local computer shop to test the board for you.

Good luck with it. :)

Make sure the only place you've got Artic Silver is on the core and the heatsink. AS is conductive (if I recall correctly), and getting any on something like your bridges or another part of the chip can fry it, or just prevent it from booting.

well, took it to a local computer store who robbed me fifteen quid only to confirm (after some decent testing, mind you) that I was right... it was the motherboard that had died, and it was beyond repair. :(

i then rang up the company i bought it from who said that i had to ship it out to them (more money!!) and if it's faulty they'll send a replacement.

ok, so it's pretty much sorted, but how do i live without my shiny new p4 for almost a week (if not more!)??

anyone got anything else for me to overclock??? :p
