firstly i'd advise running it from a folder which isn't in a particular user's folder - may not be the problem but it has to be better than running it on the desktop.

i run multiple instances in seperate folders eg. console1 and console2 in a directory in program files

i also use the -local switch but i'm told it isn't necessary

hope this helps

I can't be sure from the pic but it looks like you ran the program from the desktop instead of from a folder. Try to put it in a folder then run it from the start (delete all but the FAH program. It will download a core and create some files. See if that helps. It could also be that the assignment server is down. Give it a little time and it should pick up some work. Good luck and Fold on!!!!

Edit: beat me to it Rich...Nice job:D

KlowD, have you tried deleting every other file except the exe? Starting fresh you know?

I once had a problem where the text client wasn't connecting to the servers. Turned out to be my error. During the configuration, it asks you various questions, like you username and such. When it came to "Use Proxy" and "Use Internet Explorer Settings", I just answered "Y". Turns out that doesn't work. You have to spell out "YES" or it doesn't know what to do.

My two cents...

I did delete all files and start over many times. Including formatting twice! I also found out about the typing out "yes". I have done that. This has never happened before. I had it folding once when I copied the folder from my main rig to the client rig, and just deleted the config file and set that all back up. It folded till it got done with the last thing I was working on. Then I never worked again. Do I have to have the client set as "Machine ID 2"? I had installed F@H on my friends comp and it worked fine using my name and team 32. I think it might be the way I have my proxy set up...ive been working with it since I got home, and I still cant figure out WTF is going on. Even tho it does download work! So, maybe its not my proxy...

Do you have your Internet Explorer Connection settings on "Auto Detect" or a manual value? If you know the IP address of your proxy server, set up you Internet Explorer connection settings on manually and uncheck the Auto detect settings box. That can mess things up sometimes.

Well, I am not the guy to ask about XP but up to XP, the desktop has been a folder on your HD and has not had some type of "do not run folding" priviledge going on.

The date of jan/3 is something I wonder about. Perhaps you are turning in work units that appear to be far out of the deadline?

Try deleting the work folder also. It is saying it is a bad work unit. That might help.

Good luck

you only need to set the machine ID if you are running more than one instance on the same machine. If this is a seperate machine (or even seperate OS on same machine) then it will obtain a new user ID from stanford.

the -local switch forces the client to use files in the folder in which it is running rather than using the folder specified in the registry. if you want to give it a try then right click the shortcut on your desktop and change the target to:

"C:\F@H\FAH3Console.exe" -local

note the positions of the quotes - they should be exactly like that for XP

sorry if my earlier ramblings confused matters

and another thing.

If you "transfered" the folding client to another computer, it will not work. That's why you're getting the "machine ID error". You need to do a fresh install.

Furthermore, you *might* have to TOTALLY remove the client. That means uninstall it, delete the folders that are left, AND clean it from the registry.

You can find the folding program in the registry by searching for "pande group" and "folding".

I had to do that to a couple of machines.

*Wedo is not responsible for any damage you do to your registry as it should only be done by semi-advanced computer users.. blah blah blah... legal stuff goes here"

alright, I erased everything from the registry...erased the client (F@H) and redownloaded it...
still no go

I agree with Malpine Walis , are you sure that the date yur comp shows is correct? looks like jan 3, not current. The server may think the work is really old:(

that really is weird - have you tried the GUI version to see if you get the same problem?

the GUI version is sometimes a bit more stable and runs just as fast as the console if you keep it minimised anyway

i guess it's possible you could have got stuck with a bad WU and it will continue to be re-downloaded no matter what you change in the config - in this case you could try adding the -advmethods flag which would force the console to download a Gromacs core WU.

It will only download a new gromac core and WU after it is finished with the current WU.

If you suspect you have a bad WU, close the client, delete the folder called "work" then restart the client.

Do you have complete Administrator privileges on this machine? That may be an issue.

I have reset the time and date to the right time, yes, I ALWAYS have admin access. :) The GUI version just does work at all. I got it to do something the other day, but after it said "working" it locked up :(:(:( Ill try the gromacs...maybe thatll help...even tho its a celery :D

alright, gromacs=nogo...still File_IO_ERROR

Perhaps it is the use of the desktop as the location for folding.

I always put it in a folder on my root. I also suggest you check the permissions allocated to that folder. I have had problems similar to that.

KLowD9x
10-20-02, 08:23 PM
How do you check permissions?

Why not just install the GUI version and be done with it.

KLowD9x

GUI version of F@H? becuase it uses the same core and has the same problems...

cmcquistion

Sometimes, you can't download a work unit, because Stanford's servers are down.

If you install the GUI client in the default location, and let it run for an hour, and it still doesn't work, then give up.

KLowD9x
10-25-02, 03:34 PM
Its not that, it connects, downloads, then says it cant open the WU

the only thing i can think is that somehow your hardware is corrupting the files - but i can't think that everything else would work fine

have you tried backing the OC off a bit?

clutching at straws now :p

or even try a non NT based OS - or maybe it's a problem with a driver you use

i dunno :(

FYI I tried to setup F@H on my comp at work. It would always crash and lock the system up. I do have admin priviledges (Win2k). Finally determined that it would run on the small d: drive that is FAT32. Wouldn't work at all on C: (NTFS). I suspect that it had something to do with read/write file permissions.

You could try using a small FAT32 partition, depending on how your comp is setup

I have it running fine on 20 rigs with NTFS, all W2K pro. Someone had a problem where the solution was to add the "everyone" group to the folding directory (folder) and give that group full control in the permissions.

I don't know what happened to Klow's computer. Seems really odd as I've set the client up on numerous rigs made up of different components....

Keep us posted Klow if you haven't left to find the aliens. :D

well good to hear it's doing something useful - hope you are crunching for the OC SETI team :D

I hope we'll see you again in a few months when SETI shuts down

SETI is shutting down? I guess, since that computer wont be doing anything, and wont fold...itll be sold...

SETI is shutting down for a bit to prepare for SETI 2 - hopefully some of the OC SETI team will come over to fold for that time.

If all it's doing is folding/seti then why not try win98 :D

hehehe - jk :p
