is it really any good? the instruction was quite carefull. besides, anyone uses it on the thermaltake volcano 9? i have hard time installing that baby.
Yeah, it's that good. Just follow the application instructions and use a very thin layer.
For best results, make sure your heat sink has a flat surface as well. There are several good threads with instructions on how to lap your heatsink here (use our excellent search function).
Of course, if you are not overclocking, any old thermal paste will work. But for less than $10 for a tube (shipped), it's not a bad investment (ASIII), especially if you mount and remount a lot of HSF's.
Welcome to the forums!
Yeah, AS3 is awesome. Make sure to get some. :)

but do you think my Volcano 9 still need some laping? You may have to start a new thread in the "General Cooling" to ask about your Volcano. I don't know how smooth they are when shipped. I have an original Glaciator which needed to be lapped badly! But HSFs, even of the same model, can vary greatly in how well lapped they come. If you can drag your fingernail across the bottom and feel and/or hear the ridges from machining, then it probably could use it. Like I said, there are already threads with lapping instructions if you need them.

its not the greatest.....everyone goes nuts over it but the problem is it doesnt run that cool with my MP, and i have a valcano 7 and it still idles @ 48 degrees :argue:
There are a lot of factors that affect the run temp. They include but are not limited to: 1. Thermal compound used. 2. How the thermal compound is applied. 3. The physics of the heatsink and how well it dissipates heat. 4. The air flow through the heatsink. 5. The airflow in the case. 6. The ambient temperature in the room. 7. How you measure the temperature. 8. Where you measure the temperature. 9. The manufacturing irregularities of the CPU. 10. The load on the CPU.
This is just to name a few. I probably forgot some. By the way, 48C is not that bad.

I use ASIII with a Volcano7+ I idle about 38c 42load. I alos put some on my NB. It made a 5c difference on my Duron setup as well.

Good reply...;)

I use AS3 on my xp 2000+ @ 1850mhz (195x9.5) at 1.9vCore
My load temps are 40c. I'm using an AX-7 with an 84cfm Tornado. My ambient temp being that of up to 30c.

I use the Antec Silver Paste I got at best buy, pretty much the same thing 99% micronized silver. With my Volcano 7 i get temps around 40c idle, 44c load on an athlon 1800.
I think a question you should ask yourself is it worth taking the risk of shorting out your hardware just to knock off a few degrees? It is made of silver and is slightly conductive, so if your not careful and put too much on or get it on your fingers and touch your board you might have a new keychain. I have never had this problem, and most people dont have this problem, but its not unheard of. Just use the same rule of thumb for everything involving your PC. slow, steady, and always double check.

pyros i admire ur modo..... i bust open the fedex boxes trip up the stares... drop the static free bags (filled with chips).... and drool all over my silicon wonders (not boobs).... seem to be runnning smooth though:D
Well, I never said I did it that way.:D I usually run around dropping it, and showing it off to anyone I can find. LMAO
But hey, It does sound like good advice, maybe I'll follow it some day. :p

I have used RadioShack thermal paste (cheap) and AS3 (expensive) You know what I saw in temp change? Not one degree!
I've switched back and forth a few times, just to humor myself. Same result...
Personally, I prefer the radioshack paste. Cheap and easier to apply and clean.

I must be one of the only people using Artic Alumina. I really like the bact that it is completely non conductive. I bought this right before AS3 come out and it has done me well on a 800Mhz celeron, (2) XP1800 and a K6 550.

I use AS2 on my XP 1700+, and it works great. I actually order some AS3 a few weeks ago, with an AX-7 and a Tornado. I haven't put any of it on yet, been too busy with rl stuff. I plan on lapping the AX-7 this weekend, because my new Abit KD7 will be here on Monday.

I do admit, getting the V9 on was a P.I.T.A.
