I am a complete newbie to the world of broadband having only recently had it installed - therefore I am looking to the gurus in this field! Previously I only had a dial up modem and was using Phone Tools software (came with modem) to receive and send fax messages. My question is does anyone know of similar software that works with my Aztech ADSL Ethernet Modem and Dlink DFE538TX? (I tried doing a search but the word fax is less than the statutory minimum of 4 letters required in the search engine!!!) I am using win2K Pro if thats relevant.

No... You can't use the ADSL modem as you used you 56k Modem to do faxes... I've got a D-Link DFE 538TX NIC and an Efficent Networks Speed Stream 5260 ADSL Modem trust me I've tryed to look for such a set up * sigh*, but before I found something that kinda worked for faxes... like through e-mail some how.... ummm I think I was Called winFAX... go to the downloads.com web site and do a search there. oh well good luck :)

You can't send faxes through your ADSL modem.
There are services on the internet, like http://www.efax.com that will allow you to send and recieve faxes through the internet (your get a phone number that people can fax to, and you can send faxes to people using their program).
Web email services like www.mail.com provide free fax recieving to your email account.
The alternative is to use your old fax modem to do the faxing, and a program that will fax for you (winfax is good)

Thanks for the feedback - if I was to use my old fax modem in tandem with my broadband on the same line (for faxing only) will it slow down my download/upload speed on broadband?

Using your aDSL modem to surf the net and using a regular modem as a fax machine shouldn't have any affect at all. I have had an external 56k modem connected to the phone line as an answering machine/fax machine before with no problems whatsoever.

Your phone line and your ADSL internet run on different frequencies. Your regular phone line (in which voice and/or fax and/or 56k modem data) are sent though, runs between 300-3400 Hz. Everything not in that band will be filtered out at the nearest phone company site (or PBX). The trick is, on that range above 3400Hz, you can pur ADSL data there, and take it off the line before the PBX.
