I did post this in GCRD, but i thought it may work better here. .

Okay.. heres basically what I want to do. I'm going to install WIN VNC on my g/f's computer, so I can mess with her a little bit. Problem is, she has a dynamic IP. I need to figure out a FREE way to obtain her current IP address at all times. The only thing I thought of is doing a direct connection in instant messenger, and then doing a netstat, but shes always turning off her computer, so it changes too often, and thats a PITA. Someone recommended Dns2Go, but its shareware now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I do have physical access to her computer, if I need to install anything on there.

I suggest getting a Dynamic DNS hostname from No-IP.com, or another provider.

1. goto www.no-ip.com
2. sign up for their free no-ip service.
3. go back to www.no-ip.com with the password they email you, and log in.
4. click on the "add host" button
5. create a host, eg: mynewhost.no-ip.com

to automate the process of updating the ip:
1. download the "DUN" no-ip program from their website
2. install it, and run it.
3. put in your email and password, it will retrieve a list of hostnames you have registered (mynewhost.no-ip.com)
4. check the little box beside it, and configure it to auto-update.

Then, instead of typing in her ip, you can type in the Dynamic DNS hostname, and it'll resove to her correct IP every time:

http://mynewhost.no-ip.com:5800
ping mynewhost.no-ip.com
etc.

I don’t understand, are you saying that you are doing all this without her knowledge?

I was thinking a remote-assistance type situation.. but maybe..
