View Full Version : Google outproduces OC.com
If you've looked at the team totals on Statsman today it appears that Google has out produced us on the last 2 updates. It seems that the asleep at the wheel folding monster is going to surpass OC.com & OCAU's production within a week or two. It would not at all be surprised if Google was producing more than [H] before the end of the year, or just a bit more conservative late January.
I know there was a thread about this a bit ago but I thought that the recent outproduction was noteworthy.

well, it's time to kick it into high gear then. No way the mindless can produce more than us! FOLDERS UNITE!!! Speaking of rivals...what happened to Rage3D? hmmmm 9-) I guess they could talk the talk, but not walk the walk.

the loss of how? hurt rage or course, i mean he was good for 371 procs and peaked at 10k pts/wk  that kinda loss would certainly leve a dent. But, i know a few of them ran into bandwidth issues and work related shutdowns. They are still going strong though, a very formidable team.
Google looks to be unstoppable at the moment :( but hey that is a lot of people folding and a whole lot going to the folding cause. It would be nice to hold them off but we are gunning for OCAU right now :) after we pass them, then we go for [H] and then Google;)

motion to regard google as unregistered.
they should not count.
Last update we beat them, but they beat us on the two before. Considering they are 550,000 points behind us, twenty or so points each update doesn't mean we will lose our place to them soon.
Lets show Google that the hardcore folders can kick the office workers asses!

Google will overtake our production and they will surpass us in total points.. and it will probably take less time than you'd think. Notice that at least 50 - 100 users are added to the Google machine each update. Sure they are only outproducing us by twenty points today but that twenty points will multiply quickly.
We can't stop them from overtaking us no matter how many rigs we add or how high we overclock them.. unless we add 50 - 100 every six hours. Let me know when we can manage that.
I think disregarding them is the only way to deal with the situation, because if we try to fight them off we will get squashed.. probably before the end of the month.

Right now on the Stanford web site, Google has 5303 active processors for the week.
That is too much to fight. As I have suggested before, with many others, is that they are a default team.
They are not organized, they do not communicate with each other about the science or anything to do with the project. Therefore I accept that they are just another anonymous team.
It is also possible that many of those anonymous folders will need help at some point. They may very well want to learn more.
We can always try to recruit, and maybe the easiest recruits are already trained to obey. They just need to know for whom they fold.
Someday they all need help. Is there anyone of us here who has done everything they know now all by themselves. There are always little issues coming up with which we need help.
Just my nickel, I would say 2 cents, but you know inflation
What is Google doing to mttivate these new folders. Is it built in to the google tool bar ....sorry but I don't know how they are getting all these people to fold...anyone know the deal?

here's the info you're looking for on the Google Toobar thingy. The funny thing is that the Google CEO is a graduate of Stanford. 8-D Well, as long as they keep recruiting, it benifits us all. But I do agree that we treat them as Anonymous. I'll poke around and see what else I can find out. Oh, if you notice they do tell you that it's IMPOSSIBLE to change teams but that feature might change in the future. SHEESH! Oh well, I'll keep looking to see what I can find out.

yeah no worries, you have to go the extra step to install the folding part of it and then you have to tell the toolbar to start folding. You won't be folding for google if you haven't done that!

The first beneficiary of this effort is Folding@home, a non-profit research project at Stanford University that is trying to understand the structure of proteins so they can develop better treatments for a number of illnesses. In the future Google Compute may allow you to donate your computing time to other worthwhile endeavors, including projects to improve Google and its services. this is direct from the Google Compute site.
It is the last sentence of this that most people like me would not approve of. What is Google going to deem as "worthwhile endeavors"
Would most users actually approve of what Google will do with their cpus in the future.
I would hope, but not trust, that the projects would be beneficial to everyone everywhere, much like Folding@home.
It looks like Google will outproduce the [H] on a daily basis soon. That is awesome production and very good for the Folding@home project.

I've been watching Google for the last week or 2 and was watching how their folding production has increased a whole bunch. Anyways, I tried installing the toolbar about a week ago and found that it didn't have the Google compute helix on the toolbar, so I untistalled it. I've been following a thread over at Rage3d talking about how Google is outproducing them now and I decided to check out the Google toolbar again today. I did a google search on "google compute", which is what they call the DC project and I came up with this page: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=google+compute . If you click on the second link on that page, it comes up to here: http://toolbar.google.com/dc/aboutdc.html . I didn't have the toolbar on this computer, so I went and installed the bugger and there was no helix for Google compute. I then went to the second link in this post and agreed and clicked the "OK, I've made my choice" button and it installed the helix. I then hit the drop box on the helix and stopped it from running and went to look and see what it put on this computer and where. Included is a screenshot of the toolbar with the Helix and also the folders installed by the program. So it looks like they are almost ready to be mass-deploying the project, just don't have any easy links to follow unless you know what to look for.
----notes about changing user and team #----

OK finally got it working:D There is one snag to just changing the username and team number in the config. when you do this it gives you an error in the log because it stores the info in the registry. <<<Warning>>> Be careful when you mess with the registry<<</Warning>>> OK now when you bring the log into Notepad copy the google name it gave you, then open regedit. Search for the google name then change it to whatever name you want then change the team # to 32. now go out there and give your friends and family the google toolbar modified of course. Permision is still needed but it makes it easy for them to run. Good luck and fold on.

I am not sure if it will start on its own if you reboot though. If you have that info please post.

The comment about it being modified is probably true, considering that the founder of Google graduated from Stanford. They probably have the source code, or had the F@H programmers change the code for them. but oh well, at least they have a TON of people folding. w00t!

Has anyone else gone and looked at the Google team stats? Almost all of the team members have these ... un-natural ... assigned numeric names. Every once in a while, you see one that was catually typed in.
IMHO, Google is worse than anonymous - most of them probably don't even know they're folding, much less WHY. At least the anonymous folders made a concious decision to fold.
I second the motion to regard Google as unregistered.

I vote to disregard google, and in the process I like the idea of being able to change the toolbar. As has been said, at least if nothing else, it is adding a lot to the folding effort. i think for friends though, I will stick with making F@H a scheduled task, with their agreement of course.

They aren't doing much right now. They aren't the dedicated folders like us, so when the majority of people go to sleep, they turn their computers off. It's evident that they aren't anything to worry about. The last several updates on Statsman show us kicking their butts, along with everyone in the top 3. Google, I commend you for trying to do a good thing, but you went about it the WRONG way. I would probably bet money that a lot of the Google Compute Folders don't even understand what's going on with this program so they just stop it. *sigh* If Google really wanted to help, they'd make it more interesting. Oh well, Let's continue to fold and shoot for that 5,000,000 total points between the top 3! Let's hurry up and get our 1,000,000!!!

I have to agree with the principle of getting more people involved.
However, I believe that many Google Compute users will have proteins that do not finish within the deadlines. This will create some problems for the project as that work then gets sent out again. How big a problem is something that only Stanford and the Pande Group can know, and I am sure we will find out in the future.
It may turn out that Google is the BEST thing to happen to the project to date.
I hope that the addition of Google Compute only makes the project succeed all the sooner.
After all the reason most of us fold is to help find cures to the diseases that ravage humanity.
Therefore I welcome Google as an anonymous team and a benefit to the project...
