currently i'm running 256 megs of pc2700 mushkin RAM at 175 fsb and at cas 2 on 2.7 volts....is 2.8 volts too hot for just a heat spreader that came w/ the RAM? what benefits could i expect if i did go up to 2.8?

Usually heat isn't really an issue with ram, it doesn't get very warm. An out of spec vdimm can cause problems later on but I don't think it will have to do with heat.
