Ok i've been WCing for a while and have no clue what the scoop is on air cooling nowadays. What I need:

heatsinks that will be cooling a dual XP1600 rig that will be folding 24/7. I like things quiet (that's why I went to water) and 80mm's are a must. I don't want to spend a lot either....so what is the heatsink I'm looking for you air cooling gurus.

Thanks :)

sounds like 2 thermalright ax-7's are in order. get the thermaltake smart fan II. they are controllable 3 ways. full out speed, temperature controlled via sensor and manual controlled. specs are on the thermaltake site. yeah they are kind of loud when at full speed but at least you can control it if you can't take the noise.

I'd also recommend the Thermalright AX-7, which takes an 80mm fan and depending on the one you get, can be relatively quiet or it will do some pretty serious cooling with a high CFM fan...:)

My 2 cents...

The AX-7 is good but you may have make a few modifications if you are running them with a dual, it depends on the mobo but I know with the K7D Master they don't always fit perfectly. I got the AX-7 on one of my dual cpus but would have had to cut part of a fin to get it on the other cpu. Another option is the Volcano 7+ which doesn't take up much space around the socket area.

the AX-7 is a great HSF, but it's sorta pricy, it'll cost me ~70 bucks for 2 of em with good 80mm fans, how is the volcano 7? newegg has em for 15 a piece...I don't think heat will be the thing holding my OC back on this dualy board, but I still want them to run somewhat cool....

sk-7, and svcompucycle.com sells sunon 50 cfm's for about $6. :p

I second the sk-7. It's delivers a little better cooling than the ax-7, but is supposed to fit all motherboards including duallys. It is the replacement for the ax-7.

SVC GC68 ! lap it and put a nice fan on it... It'll do a good job, and its CHEAP!

Isn't folding a single-thread app?

The Volcano 7 is an OK heatsink, but I would recommend the AX-7 over it. Not 100% happy with my volcano, as even with a mod, it doesn't keep my CPU cool enough to OC.

Goo Kenson, folding is single threaded, but you can run two instances of it, taking advantage of both cpus.

the thermal right ax7 can be found on ebay for $20 each + shipping (and online for that price) and a good blue led 80mm rfan should only cost like $4 so...... like $50+shipping i would think?

You can get the AX-7 for about $22 so it wouldn't cost close to $70. The Volcano 7 isn't anything special, I think it just has a copper insert. The Volcano 7+ is another option, it is an copper hsf.

ill give it a shot, AX-7 sucks on low cfm. alpha 8045 would be perfect, or get dual svc goldengates with fan adapters and 80mm fans, i ran my 1600+ at 1.8ghz under 50c with 28cfm 80mm fan sucking out

Have you had personal experience with the AX-7?

Check out this review:
http://www.amdmb.com/article-display.php?ArticleID=155&PageID=2

With a Thermaltake 37 CFM fan average temp was 37.1C

There are plenty more reviews for the AX-7 @:
http://www.thermalright.com/ax7.html

... granted most with high CFM fans but some with low CFM fans and good results.

yeah, lemme see, with 20c maximum room temp i was running 45c i think it was... thats stock 1700+ when it was warmer, i was running over 50c
thas with a 28cfm fan

$11.00 shipped Priority mail for a cooler and fan. That's some pretty cheap cooling. Might get one for my current sytem and then use my AX-7 for my new one on my 1600+ AGOIA Y 0212.

I tried to put an Alpha on my K7D Master and didn't fit. SVC Goldengates would be perfect because they are only 60mm.

plus a 80mm with an adapter, and suck out of the heatsink, you got a great setup,

If you want quiet then Zalman are very good!

You say you are looking for a HSF to cool an AMD XP1600+ right?
Then i would recommend the

Zalman Flower Cooler CNPS6000-Cu CPU

It is sufficient up to AMD XP 2200+

You can buy it Here at quietpc.com (http://www.quietpcusa.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&DID=8&Product_ID=20&CATID=3) <----click there for a pic.

This is a very large heatsink so make sure you have the room for it in you case. Zalman also make a good range of GPU coolers and silent northbridge cooling too.
Check them out.

Hope this helps..

Off-hand I'd say Zalmans won't fit dual mobos.

Plus they don't perform very well. Better off getting a good heatsink with a low speed fan then getting a Zalman.

AX-7s perform fine with low speed fans. I would prefer an AX-7 with a low speed fan over a Zalman.
