Parallel would be faster. It's cheaper to use but the USB network would definitely be easier to setup.

now if i used USB do i need a hub or can i just plug them directly into each other using an extension cable? the lappy is running 95 and my computer is running XP? would this work out?

Depending on the proggy, parallel can hit about 2Mbit/sec, serial could get 230Kbit/sec but more likely 115Kbit/sec, and USB gets 11Mbit/sec. Parallel might seem slower, but in certain applications, will actually be faster than USB due to USB loading the CPU and ECP Parallel devices being able to use DMA.
