View Full Version : P4 Air Cooling?
I have put my Vapochill case out to pasture, I have been losing to many chips from condensation & SNDS. I am puting my 2.8 P 4 in a Lian Li and gonna go with HSF. I still want to overclock my chip but I don't have any experience with P4 HSF. I am looking for a good performance to noise ratio. I HATE LOUD FANS BIG TIME! And no I ain't gonna get one of the Zalman Gay Flowers either. What is out there? what works good with low noise.
Thanks bros, krag

What is SNDS?
Thanks

P4's don't like low temps + high voltage. Its still a theory.

just get the zalman hs.. (lol.. gay flower.. lol)
and use a 120mm panaflo medium on it.. have one.. pretty quiet..
Do you get good oc results/performance with it?
I would but...my case has a side window init. I don't want the big fat gay flower blower blocking my view.

get the MCX4000 or the Alpha PAL whatever the number is for thier 478 cooers, or the heatpipe IHC-001. and if you get one of the first too, find an old HP pavilion 486 rio it's PSU out and use the fan from that, those NMB fans kick arse for bieng 8 years old! or you cna pay like $10 + shipping online for something better like a tornado. I have stock coolnig now and it runs nice, and The Spyder is sellnig me a MCX4000 tomorrow i'll let you know how it goes when I have a chance to install it.

I use the Zalman CNPS6500B AlCu cooler, with the supplied 92mm fan.
My P4 2.40B (B0 optical shrink stepping) runs at 3.0 GHz with it (39C idle, 53 C at full load).
I'm open to using a bigger fan if it's really quiet.
Other than that, I'm very happy with the Zalman's performance.

Yeah bro. let me know yuor results. Cause I am leaning towards the swiftech mcx4000.

Actually, thats very impressive...I really did not expect that kind of performancve from the zalman. But....I don't think it will work for the case that I am gonna get. I am going to purchase (hopefully by Fri.) a Lian Li http://www.explosivelabs.com/reviews/lianli_pc6089/
It has a window and if I remember right the zalman's fan is placed right in front of the pci slots...which would junk up the view through the window.

Actually, only the 'swing arm' which holds the fan, is attached to the top 3 PCI/agp screw points. The fan itself is swung out and positioned directly above the heatsink. It SHOULD not obstruct your view, but your mileage may vary.

Well, i've never tried the zalman, tho i might someday becasue they can run VERY quiet with those 29mm fans. and that lian-li is a solid case, only prob is the top fan hole is to small and restricts the airflow. you may want to concider modding that a bit. i'm adding a top window to mine so problem solved right there :)

Thanks for the tip.
My case is actually very large, and there are no airflow problems.
I have the Antec/Chenming 1240, which is about as big as they come :)

Do you have a side blow hole...so that the zalman fan pushes outside air onto the cpu? Or is the zalamn fan pushing the inside case air?
Is it really quiet? Cause...quiet just may sway me.:D

I had it, it certainly is a lot quiter that the stock intel hsf but if you're going to be gaming for hours then it's not going to be so stable.

My case does not have a side blowhole, so it's pushing the in-case air onto the cpu.
My airflow is never compromised though.
Quiet? My case has 6 fans. The power supply has two, the front-bottom of the case has two sucking air in, the top back of the case has two, pushing air out.
Those fans (standard 80 mm) make more noise than the Zalman...
When I get around to it, I wmight replace the 4 80mm fans with more expensive fans (the quietest I can find), but for now the noise levels are more than acceptable (better than the thermaltake 6 I had on my TBird in there previously...7000 rpm sounded like a windtunnel).

I will be using my rig for quite a bit of gaming as soon as "Unreal 2: The Awakening" comes out. Man...I have been waiting for a loooooong time for this bad boy to show up.

I question that post about the stability.
mine is rock stable at 2.91 GHz.
I run Prime95, I play UT2003 online, I rip/re-encode DVD's, all VERY intensive stuff. Never a hitch.
And I'm monitoring my temps at all times...

krag aint talkin about just 2.9 man, i tihnk for the kind of O/Cs he cwants a normal MCX4000 HSF with the fan on a reo would be much better. that way when your gaming if you worry bout it you cna turn up the fan and when your asleep you can turn it down and let speed step worry about noise.

Just get the mcx-4000 with the stock TMD fan, it is very quiet and definetly does the job (top ranked cooling without the noise!). There was some worry about the fans having problems but it was overblown...
Good luck!

I see that you have a 1gig oc...sweet bro. What kind of temps are you getting with the swiftech?

It's thanks to you and other unhappy Vapochill users that I went with the Prometeia. Six months going strong with no condensation. Why not try that first?
Don't you remember air? Vaccum cleaner noise coming out of your case? Temps that climb no matter what you do? OC limited due to high temps? It's your computer (and your hearing) and I'd hate to see you burn out another CPU, but I'd give the Prometeia serious consideration.

I thought about it but....there is no way my wife would let me buy a Prometia. I can't afford it...I think it's $650? I am using all of my grovelling and begging tecniques just to get the Lian LI! he he But seriously, the Prometia has a really good concept with the vacuum rubber wrap stuuf that they use to seal the chip with.

It's thanks to you that i'm thinking of splashing out $600 on a Prometeia at the moment :D

Lian Li rocks, but that case is not good. Take a look at the front intake fans. The hole for them to suck air in is like 1 inch wide, and is on the bottom of the case. It is the worse design that Lian Li has come up with yet. I would advise any other one of their cases. I currently have 2. A pc-60, and a pc-6085. I would recommend the 6085, because those blue LEDs look great infront. If you are into windows you could easily mod it, and it will cost you less than the 6089 even with the mod window.
GET THE 6085 THE DESIGN OF THE FRONT INTAKE BLOWS ON THE 6089.
Anyway, hope you consider my advice.

Nope, I hope you do.
I just found out what it was. Actually, I think it is two things, 1) factory fan/rheostat & window. Just what I was gonna do to the 6085a....this is way better, so now.....its the 6085t bros!!!
Here is a linkage to it...http://www.pcreview.co.uk/article.php?threadid=496
Man I really must have this case. I can't believe how freakin' killer this bad boy is!! The thing is...I can't find it for sale ANYWHERE! I have been searching the web...I did find it forsale at a Canadian shop, but they don't have any USA selections in thier customer registration forms. DANG IT!!! I must have it...I must...I must...cannot go on much longer without it. AAAhhhhhh! I am helpless...Lian Li lust is controlling me....... he he

I installed my MCX400 and it is a bitch to set up! I would recommend you be prepared for a hastle getting it in right. I still need to re seat it before I get it all right.

Post some pics bro! Is it very loud? And what are yuor before and after temps?
Intrepid
10-25-02, 08:11 PM
like i said it needs re mounting, which means i need ot take the whole comp apart again. the temps are about same with a silent fan on it and it is not seated all the way. it was used and one of the bolts was missing and i have a crappy screw in its palce need to have that improved so one corner is bad.
Ther is an empty sleve inbetween the fan nad HSF for beter more evened out airflow to cool the center pins.
NICE! The heatsink pins aren't as big as I had thought. Or yuo have a monster fan blowing on it.
Intrepid
10-25-02, 08:20 PM
they are not big but VERY tightly packed in! so much so that i am getting a lot of back flow. they should have instead of having flat heads have spiked heads on te inner pins to help let more air in there.
and it is a kick ass fan, came from a 486 and it is as good as any Nidec or Delta. it's an NMB
Looks like you could use some northbridge cooling action. Here is a shot of my case...yeah I am gonna try my Vapo one more time. I got my Asus P4PE mobo in it (came yesterday) all I need is my new 2.8 and I'm ready to try again. I got a real good northbridge cooler on it...it's the T.T. Tiger 1.
