I bought a computer with an XP 1700 and I was wondering if I felt like upgrading a little would I have to get a new motherboard to support the new XP 2400.

proabably yes, but there is a very small chance u could get support for it by flashing your bios. (Very Small Chance seen as it cam with a 1700 so it must be quiet old now)

need to track down who made the mobo.visit a site for the comps maker and search the specs.or sometimes the mobo has the manufactures name on it.then go from there.

there is to many variables to just guess.

I think the big key would be as Tragic Monkey says whether you can flash the BIOS for your mobo. If you can then there is a strong possibility that you will be able to support a XP2400+

Yeah, I tried to figure out what the motherboard was along time ago when I wanted to try the FSB but I could never figure it out. I know it is a VIA KT133 chipset. I haven't found specs yet though.

A lot of the KT133's have official support up to XP2000+ but beyond that I dont know. There is only official support by 266's, 333's and 400's as well as the new NVidias for the XP2400+

i know up until 3 weeks ago, my computer didn't even have support for anything above 2000+...so, you MIGHT see a BIOS flash come out...i doubt it though...not with that chipset

i made the mistake and bought a kt400...... false advertising that the 1/6 pci divider WORKED... which is doens't, which means any fsb over 200mhz are outta the question..... wait for Nforce 2, which give you about 1-3 weeks to get the money
