Well I took the cover off my power supply, and I noticed that my case temps went up a bit but my CPU temps dropped. My case temps are usually in the high 80's, now there in the low 90's. My CPU temps were usually in the 100 teens, now there below 110. These are IDLE temps, I haven't heated it up yet.

(puts pants back on)...

Out of curiosity, does the open side face upward or downward on your particular supply?

downward, I guess the heat would just sit there and not excape very well. Now with the cover off I get better ventilation. Well I would attach a pic but it won't let me!!!!!

I also had the cover taken off from my PSU. I have midi case with PSU next to slotket held PIII. In front are of course CD drives cables etc. So taking the cover off helped airflow to CPU heatsink. Innards of the PSU were then facing CPU and air could go from below through the PSU to the heatsink.

There is one thing though. It is possible to get electric shock from the back side of the power cord connector even when power is off. So it is better to take the power cord off when working inside the case (I managed to electrocute some hair from my index finger with 220 V).
