if i ran a seperate 230 watt psu, would it power a 156 watt pelt if the pelt is the only thing running on it?
sure. why to you doubt it will run the 156watt pelt?

Its not that easy as you would assume...your supposed to have like double the power than the peltier requires, right? I can't remember exaclty, so someone is going to have to say how it goes, but I know you can't run the 156w on 156watt PSU.
I think 230w is getting there, but still not enough. If it is twice, then a 300w PSU should be ok, right guys?

id go for 300w just to be sure,
Don't psu's have set max amps for each voltage? So that means if I wanted to run a pelt on my 300 watt supply for some reason, I could only have 144 watts of 12v power (12v x 12A). If this is correct, you might be better off making your own that is 15v with lots of watts.
Don't use a computer PSU for a 156 watt tec! You are asking for problems. Get a supply that is up to the task. Check this out http://www.teamdelta.com/products/prod3.htm
$40 for 21 amps not a bad deal and plenty of power. Also has a trimmer so you can adjust the vout.

hey Ken will that $40 power supply handle the 172 watt?
No a 172watt needs 24 volts that is a 12 volt supply ideal for a 156w tec
