View Full Version : 800 CFM fans

I was lookin through this car mag when i noticed this fan that cools down car engines and push's 800 CFM of air. its 24cmx24cm

I want to know if I were to buy some PVC piping and leave one end open and with the other end stick the fan into it, would this create a windtunnel effective for cooling? Im thinking that I could mod my case so that i have this pipe running from the top down to where the cpu fan sits. Replace the CPU fan and have 800 CFM of air sucking off the heat sink straight out my PC.

Would i suck up any diod's of the motherboard.

This does sound nuts and i know its gonna sound like a car but imagine a computer cpu running @ room temps on air.

:D

lol find a 240mm to 80mm fan adapter and mount that right on the heatsink

And get yourself some ear plugs!! :)

and you just might want to invest in a fan grill for that if you like having fingers

anyway, that soounds kool, there are alot of automotive fans that are not really that loud. I have a small unit from a MG that Im thinking of using in my custom case...

rudski u just gave me a crazy idea to make some kind of r/c plane with one of those... "hmmm" 240 mm fan right?

Also... you might want to put up some chicken wire and danger signs around your tower. Just incase you have living animals in your house... such as cats, would be an ugly site. :p

hmm...one comment:
HELL YES!!

that would rock...hmm slk-800, ops you have a p4, then ax-478 and duct....i think that you could do some cool over clocking...or have you though about a car radiator and water cooling...:):)

lol @ will

Watercooling Im yet to be 100% convinced that it won't stuff-up my PC.

But yes this idea "should" be the same as watercooling.
At best this windtunnel will cool my cpu to room temps. Room temps r 20 odd degress, so im thinkin if worst comes to worst ill have a P4 2.0 @ 3ghz on air.

3Ghz asking too much from 800cfm fans?

the pressure level will probably make your heat sing collapse or explode!!needles to mention the hovering effect. my volcano 7 fugged my finger up (2 blade sheared off the fan) pretty good a few weeks ago. no blood but hurt like a bi*ch for 2 days. im over it.

i think that fan would let you hit 3 easy...if its cool air and all. but with a car radiator...man....need i say more.

24x24cm... you might need a second psu to power the thing. How about trying to overclock (increase the rpm of) the fan <g>.

Anyway, GO FOR IT. It sounds like a really cool mod to try out and see how effective it is at cooling your pc.

The fan I saw in this Mag ran on 12volts :D

perfect for this project.

Well guys i have to say IM GONNA DO IT!!!!!!!

Ill post back when i do.

1 question, what about the pressure inside the case. DO u think i would need 2 fans, 1 blowing and the other sucking?

Rudski
10-29-02, 08:44 AM
what problems could i expect?

weponhead
10-29-02, 08:47 AM
By some simple math to keep all pressure equal "in a completley sealed case" you would need 2 120 mm fans moving 400 CFM each or a little less because depending what tubing you use you will get obstructions in airflow and if your duct is right over the HSU then it may not be able to draw 800 cfm , and it was in a car right? All cars if in not mistaken un on a 12v system so any car part you get should run on 12V

im gonna buy 4 of those fans and hover around my house :D
..but yea youll have hurricane forces :D keeping that system cool, so go for it!

HAHAH i found 2100 CFm fans.

45 cm X 45 cm runs on 12 volts and pushes 2100CFM of air.
u think then i'd have a hovercraft?

dear god...
how much do these 2100 CFM fans cost and where can i get them??:p

Edit: you sure its 2100CFM? cause umm... wouldnt that be dangerous or something, i mean that could recirculate my entire house in a matter of seconds.

are you sure? 2100cfm for a 45cm square? that 800cfm one is 240cm

hahahah.

Guys have a look @ car parts. Thats im talkin about if u haven't worked it out is putting a thermo fan for a car onto my Pc.
They come in many sizes. :P
24cm = 800 CFM = $100 (australian)
45cm = 2100 CFM = $200 (australian) :D

probably alot cheaper in north america half the aussie dollar.

Anyways they all run on 12 volts But the problem is working out the volume of the piping. Because whats the point of having 800+CFM when your pipes only allow for a max of 150 cm3 of air.

Cheesy Peas
10-30-02, 05:41 PM
wont it just empty the air out of it really quickly and then replace it? it shouldnt really matter..

45cm = 2100 CFM... if i had four of those for my car, i wouldnt need an engine :D

hmmm 4 of them and a plank of wood with a lot of batteries. I think i can fly

10-30-02, 11:16 PM
ok , now .. logically lol how many PSI would those create? and how many can i fit in the bottom of my rig as a experiment? i need a dimmer switch .. lol a couple of those fans .. and.... some tie down cable :p if i had the money i would actually try that because its quite pheasble that about 4 of those could move your computer? maybe lol who wants to try.. and i seriously reccomend the tie down straps incase in does become airborne .. :D even though it would rip out the power cord and bring itself crashing down eventually ..

wouldn't work too much back pressure i say

well first things first... can the fan move itself?? much less a computer case? someone wanna try this? i dont have the money :D ...

AllGore
10-31-02, 06:50 PM
why not sell your heatsink to raise money for the fan, its not like you are gonna need it anyway.... Oh one problem, wont it suck the processor up the duct if there isnt a heavy heatsink clamped over the top?:D

how about trying to have an opening for the air to enter with a alu filter to hold some dry ice to the side of the hole (FAR below room temperature then...), mite need to bolt in firmly in place so it dont get ripped off and dissapear up the "shoot" along with all your loose power cables, agp/pci cards, ram and spare ide cables....
id like to see what a tissue would look like after a "trip":p

2100 cfm!!! caps start blowing off the board at that point.

OK!! now that we all know about big fans..but you know when a man gets a fan that big i think hes trying to compensate for something..

also there are for cars not computers and thats for a reason.

Let him try it... heck, jig saws were meant for wood at one time, Neon was meant for signs (CC), and water was meant for drinking...

Remember the name of this forum is Alternative modding...

I say, break out another PSU and over volt the fan to 24 volts and see if you can break some law of physics or something.. Who knows.. maybe you can be the first person in history to create a black hole.....:)

Thanks Palee, im makin it as we speak :D

Stupid question time. :D

"If i were to put 24 volt to the fan would it spin twice as fast or would it just burn out?"

country_3030
11-01-02, 09:16 PM
Hey go for it. I can say this since it is your system. I think 6volts would be plenty with that fan just use the 5v pin on ps and you got it made.

Turando

with the money you are gonna spend on the fans, i would just get a vapo chill. all you will gain from this is some boken components, bloody fingers and a big "why the **** did i spend all this money on some fans" 2100cfm, lol, there wont be enough air in your case to suck out, and you will probably find that there reading of 2100cfm is more like 500cfm. My rod fan is louder than the engine and thats about a foot squared, so i doubt they will be any different than a standard car rad fan.

cheers, Turando

umm?

The fan cost 100 bucks for the 800 CFM.
$200 for 2100 CFM

vapochill unit $1000.

This is the alternative mod section. Buying a vapochill (don't get me wrong i would love one) isn't modding. ITs BUYING a case.

SIF im gonna do that. Id rather make my case, make it look nice and pretty and that way i can have some serious cooling for 1/20th of a price of a vapochill

i didn't mean the actual vapo chill, u could make a phase change with that money, but by all means. buy the fan. i just dont think it will be worth the money. before you buy one, atleast test a 12v car fan with your ducting to see if it will avtually work, havent really read what you are saying, but is your ducting gonna come from a exterior source like a window? or just the room? because trying to buy ducting at 24cm will

1. cost about $50 as you wont be able to get it in small quantities
2. not really be easy to mount, as it will pretty much bee the whole side of your case:o

im sorry but i think after you put that fan in you must put this sign on your puter for legal purposes   :D

LittlePiggie
11-03-02, 01:21 AM
Hey, make a plastic cover for the mobo. kinda like the model of a black hole, with the hole on the cpu.

or

You might want to mout the fan outside with ducts running to the puter (put a screen on it to keep birds out :D) and then make a duct running through your whole system with a hole in it for the hs to stick up through........maybe.

*TIE YOUR CARDS DOWN!!!!!*

I don't think the vid going blank would be good.....especially when you open your case and find half a vid card with the other half stuck in the fan....bad news.

Dry ice would be sweet, especially if it is enclosed with only the hs in the duct.

Good luck.
