Hi, i have a AMD t-bird 1ghz cpu and i wanna know how the thermaltake coolers are...

At the bottom of this page is a list of CPU coolers...i would liek to get one, but it has to be a little lees costly. Which one would be best for its price. Select anyone otehr than those located on College St. I was thing of getting the Thermaltake Chrome Orb DU0462 (Duron/T-Bird Socket A)...please help me choose one...thanks

Dollar for dollar there are coolers out there that will seriously outperform any Orb.

1) Another question...do i NEED thermal compound to put on my CPU kernel? I mean im probably not gonna be overclocking it for a while, and even if i do end up wanting to o/c it, i can always take the HSF off and put the thermal compound on right? So do i need thermal compound cuase im gonan build my PC now. Im gonna get parts soon and i wanna know if i NEED thermal compound for the CPU just to run....do i need any?

2) If i dont apply and thermal compund when i first install the CPU in mobo, when i want to o/c teh chip, is it easy to go out and buy some thermal compound and apply to CPU later?

You need a thermal grease. Read all of the info at Arctic Silver. (http://www.arcticsilver.com) This should answer all of your thermal compound questions.

If you need it or not depends on the temperatures.
It's fully possible to run without thermal paste as long as it doesn't overheat.
It all depends, can't really harm to try it as long as u check the temp.

YES with any Duron or Athlon you NEED a thermal compound or something like Artic Silver. Why not for the couple of bucks it will cost anyways?

Besides you should check out someone like

www.ncix.com or www.bigfootcomputers.com or www.memoryexpress.net instead of those guys.

You may have to ship to manitoba, but the additional cost in most cases isn't that much.

This is exactly the advice I DO NOT want to see here! NEVER turn your system on w/o thermal compound and a cooling system of some type.

An AMD processor can fry itself in around 7 seconds. If the heat sink is not making proper contact with the processor, it's not going to cool at all if it doesn't have any thermal compound.

YES you NEED thermal paste of some kind. Even if it's the sorry little pad that came already attached to the heat sink that probably came with your processor.

If you want to use the pad that came with the sink, that's fine for stock cooling. If you want to move up a notch, Radio Shack sells thermal compound for $2 USD which is superior to the thermal pad. If you want to Overclock, Artic Silver is a minimum.

I never knew Radio Shack sells thermal compound? Are you sure? I went to thier site: www.radioshack.com and searched for thermal compound and didn't find any...please provide a link...thanks

But that is heat sink grease...its not thermal compound that is used directly on teh CPU kernel...

Notice the 3rd line.........Heat Sink Compound

grease is a slang for compound. They are the same thing. Heat Sink Grease/Compound, Thermal Grease/Compound........all the same thing.

The Kernel is not hardware either. it's software. How are you going to put grease on software? Maybe smear a little on your CD?

It's called the CPU die......not Kernel. =)

Any of the sites I listed are all in Canada. bigfoot computers is in Toronto I believe.
