Hey all. Just a quick question

What is the best method to clean an Athlon that had on the default aluminum HSF?

Also where is the best place to get the materials?

Acetone works great for me, you can get it at any hardware store. Isopropyl alcohol works good as well, you can get that at any drugstore.

Here are some sudgestions,

If you already unmounted the HS/F and there is a bunch of "gunk" all around the core that you can not wipe off with a tissue or q-tip use an x-acto knife. Firmly but gently place the bladelevel with the CPU core and the surface of the CPUand drag along the edge of the core, preferably the blade's sharpe edge against the core and the duller blunt end on the chip's surface. You can also use the x-acto blades sharp edge on the surface of the core to scrape off any unwanted debris. This is how I have done it in the past. X-acto blade can ba found at a dollar store for well a $1 heh. If you wanted to go a step further you could lap the surface of the heatsink and CPU's surface. With a very fine grain sandpaper, I would recomend 1000 grit to get a polished surface on both the CPU and the heatsink. The process of laping the CPU's surface with 1000 grit sand paper could take anywhere from 15 min - 30 min depending on how aggressive you wish to apply the pressure to the core, the same applies to the heatsink 15-30 min). Yes the process is boring and may seem like a waste of time but yes, it will help with dispursion of the heat from the core to the heatsink. 1000 grit sandpaper can be found at Auto stores, hardware stores like home building etc... Look for wet-dry or dry sandpaper. You can get quite a large quantity of this 1000 grit sandpaper for $3-4. Weather you decide to lap your heatsink and fan is all up to you, but reguardless, use cooling lubricant between the heatsink and CPU. You will either receive a small amount with your new heatsink and fan or you can purchaese some from a local computer retailer. If you want to go the extra mile you can get some arctic silver cooling lubricant which many overclockers recomend. I personally think something is better than nothing and usually the Cooling cream that comes with your heatsink is more than sufficient. Arctic silver is quite expensive for the average user and their is really no point in purchasing it for $8-12 dollars.

So whats our conclusion?

Kleenex if it is just cream on the core, 0.01 cents

$1 for an xacto knife at a dollar store to clean your CPU if the "stuff" is baked on to the core from the original heatsink.

Add $3-4 if you wish to purchase the sand paper for lapping purposes.

Add $8-13 if you wish to use Arctic Silver for your heat dispursement cream.

I think I gave you a LOT more info than you were looking for but you might as well learn it all in one reply than several right? hehe

Anyway, do what you think appears to be right!

Rick.

I read somewhere around here that 'acetone' (nail polish remover) is good for your h/sink, but you should use 'Isopropyl Alcohol' for the cpu.
I got some 'Iso' from my local 'Moss Pharmacy' (£4.46 for 500ml), it's the same stuff that people use for cleaning cassette player heads, etc.

Thanks all, yeah I read somewhere about the acoloh best for cpu and acetone for HSF. I was more curious about the gunk around the core and I might try the knife tech.
