View Full Version : Option shaded out in XP

When I try to make a new internet connection, the option for a "PPPoE" connection is shaded out. The only choice it gives me is "Broadband connection that is always connected to the internet."
How can I fix this?

I think I can help but I am a little confused PPPoe is just PPP over ethernet, and it is almost always used for broadband, so why not just setup that way and change what ever network settings have to be changes post install?

I tried setting up the one that is "Always connected to the Internet" but when I go to change the settings, there is no option to enter a username and password.
Hopefully this will help me:

I'll get back to you with the results.

OK, the Microsoft help didn't work at all.
Do you have any other ideas?

I installed XP on my computer agian cause i formated and it was also shaded out but good thing I didnt really need to use it cuz imusing my other computer as a gateway, but I did install XP on a friends computer and they've got ADSL which uses PPPoE and it was shaded out on theirs too the only one that was useable was Broadband but I gotta format my gateway computer so well so how that goes and hopefuly I'll be able to use PPPoE

What do you have in Network connections now? Usually XP will autodetect the ethernet connection and allow for PPPoe. Sounds like it's not detecting your NIC card or cable presence...

It has it set up as a "1394 Connection" or something like that, the one that is always connected to the net. It wont let me create one that has a Username and Password.
Maybe I will try a new NIC driver.

1394 is firewire, it's not detecting the NIC or ethernet...
do you have an Audigy sound card?

Yes I do....
Did you try installing the ISTOP software?
Gandalf

Yup, but that didn't do jack.
When I try to connect, it says "Failed to load TAP".

The new A7V333 that I just got has 1394 enabled on a jumper, and I haven't turned it off!
I think that may be my problem, I'm gonna go try it now.

Changing the jumper didn't work.
Back to square one.
Anyone have ideas?

Tried it 3 times, each time the option is still shaded out.

This really sucks, why would they shade the option out in the first place? What's the point of having it if you can't use it!

Guess what computer I am on right now!!! :D
I got it to work! A big thanks to ronin1967 for helping me out over MSN!! :)
It ended up being (I think) the fact that the jumper for IEEE 1394 was set to "Enable" the last time I reformatted, this time I turned it to "Disable" and WinXP finally gave me the option to make an account with a Username and Password.
Thanks again everyone! :D
