Here's my latest waterblock. Not designed for ultimate performance (it's aluminum), but it's cool nonetheless (pun intended:)) It's going to replace my last AX-7! Finally I'll be able to hear again.

It will be anodized dark blue, and there will be 2 blacklight LEDs illuminating the insides. The water will be white UV reactive. The top will be clear poly. Enjoy!

Update:
Here it is under a blacklight. It's anodized purple right now, which I don't really like. (Although it would look good with a Soyo....maybe I'll have to buy one:)) I'm gonna re-anodize it this weekend, and this time make it blue (for real). Enjoy the new pic!

hey.. why is there 1 one on the middle left?

nice work..
lets see how she cools... but your design will restrict flow as far as i can see... :(

-edit- remem to put it in the gallery wen your done :)

you gonna make copper with it. have you tested it?

NeoMoses
11-23-02, 02:41 AM
Nope, not gonna make it out of copper. Aluminum will perform fine for this computer. It's just a file server/folding box, and this waterblock only has to outperform the existing AX-7/delta68 that's on it now.

I doubt if this design will restrict flow. The channels are 0.375" wide (minimum), 0.6" tall, (A=0.225 in^2) which is a much larger area than 1/2" tubing (A=0.196 in^2). The extra cutouts that make the "lightning bolt" patterns will increase the turbulence, but they won't seriously impede flow.

This block was made more for the cool looks and silence than anything else.

looks real good man, lets see how it performs!

looks cool man, can't wat to see it....

erm...white UV sensitive? there's such thing as white? Cool, do you think there's such thing as white highlighters? maybe I can replace my green highlighter UV dye

to get the cool white glow, just use RIT whitener. It works well. It's bright enough to shine through a Jaggermiester bottle in a display in my bar.

hey neo nice job looks cool! i have a new idea for u i think u will like this...

The Overclocker

looks good, i have a few questions though:

1. how did yuo make it, it looks very smooth to be made on a mill - sandblasted perhaps?

2. why aluminum - i realise you have details that yuo do not need ultimate performance, but as you have put time and effor into making that waterblock, wouldn't it be better to have put in a bit more time and make it from copper - also there might be corrosion issues in your watercooling system if you use a copper heatercore - make sure it is aluminum!

JFettig

#1 he does have a mill, and sandblasted

#2 he is Anodizing the block dark blue(corosion resistant)

Smart move on the #2. What type of shop would start looking for locally, to find a place that does Anodizing?

JFettig
11-24-02, 09:58 AM
He does his own anodizing, I honestly am looking for a place too.. I mite do my own, only if i had a large enough charger....

how powerful of a charger do you need Fettig? i know what it is and all but i dont know any real specifics...

its not hard to make, transformer, bridge rectifier and capacitor - how much power do you need (voltage and amperage)

NeoMoses
11-24-02, 01:35 PM
The current needed varies based on the surface area of the piece being anodized. for small pieces like a singe WB, you only need about 5 amps at 12V. The most amperage I've seen drawn was 17 amps when I was anodizing a paintball gun body and 2 WBs.

what about powder coating the inside? Would this effect performance or would it flake?

NeoMoses
11-24-02, 04:06 PM
powder coating would work for corrosion protection, and if done well it shouldn't flake. The advantage of anodizing is that you can get an extremely thin layer, betweeen 0.0002" - 0.0005" thick, which barely affects the heat transfer characteristics of the block.

DodgeViper
11-24-02, 08:44 PM
This design like all others that fall into this category will perform all about the same. Can’t see that this block will make any headway against blocks of similar design.

to each his own. If looks weren't important, there would be no window mods, no cold cathodes, no LEDs... but we all know that's not the case.

JFettig
11-24-02, 10:59 PM
there also wouldnt be no nice shiney heatercores, all decked out with nice shiney shrouds and fann grilles etc....

DodgeViper
11-25-02, 06:00 AM
Can anyone please explain to me and others why there is a need for,

windows, leds, cathodes, and other many items that somehow have managed to appear either inside or outside the case? Do any of these items have a direct affect at computing power?

Please enlighten us, as I know I have often wondered as many others have. I am sure this is something for the young, as my system does not have any of these items. My tower sits inside my desk and not seen by anybody.

Jfettig, thanks for the compliment about my fan, shroud, core, grills. Yes it is nice, but again I do not have a window so others can't see it. My system is about getting the most out of the P/C.

Every person wants something different. I'll use cars as an example. Some people don't care what the car looks like, as long as it performs well and gets them from Point A to Point B. (i.e. minivan, station wagon, any car that runs...)

Some people want a car that performs really well, but don't want it to look flashy. (i.e. Ford Taurus SHO, Impreza WRX...)

Some people want a car that looks good, no matter what it performs like (i.e. mustang with a wimpy V6)

And there are some who want a car that performs well, looks great, and is unique. Something that nobody else has. A car that says something about their personality. (i.e. Completely restored '53 'vette, totally pimped out "Rice-Rocket," low-rider....)

Each one of these has its parallels in computing. That's why we have Compaq, AlienWare, and other brand names with different levels of performance. That's why we have online stores that sell individual components, from high performance motherboards to cold cathodes. Every person is different, and some want their computer to say something about their personality.

Sorry to hear that you destroyed a 53 vette. I own a 57 vette.

SemiCycle

I think some people make this into an artform. Think of Blade Runners Watercooled Geforce4 card. He really took the time to polish up the waterblock and barbs to give it good appearance. It really wasn't needed, but it really has a different effect when the looks match the performance. It may be bad, but many things in life are like this. Think about these :

--If you go to a nice resturant, you want your great tasting food to be presented nicely too.
--Most great looking cars look good to. Makes them easier to sell
--A nice comfortable couch wont sell too well if it looks like dust bag, right?

JFettig
11-25-02, 08:18 PM
I dont get why people want the windows and cathodes, but for some reason they are really nice, anD I like them too. It makes me wonder how weird I really am:D

and were did it say he destroyed his vette?

Why is that bad? What is wrong with eye candy?

I think it's a matter of opinion: in a particular field, some people like good looking things, some don't feel the need.

Edit: and among the people who like good looking things, there might also be a difference of taste! :D

Well when you take a hand made car such as the 1953 vette and only 300 were made and turn it into a low rider you have destroyed the car. This is a very rare and expensive car. The first vette rolled of the line in January 1953 all were white with red interior. The car came with a 150 HP motor and 2 speed transmission. Yes this car was destroyed.

This would be about online with the guy who bought a very expensive painting a few years ago and laser cut it into 1000 pieces and sold each piece for $10,000 dollars with a one time ticket to meet at a undisclosed spot to put the puzzle back together again to view the art.

I don't have a problem either. I just wanted someone to enlighten me as to why they mod their system in such a way.

Yep GF it looks like its ready for Halloween. I would have a hard time explaining that system in the office.

No no no no no no noooo! that's not what I was saying. What kind of sick, twisted person would take a 53 'vette and turn it into a lowrider? That sickens me just thinking of it.

This is what I meant. Some people like their car to be unique and flashy. Any 53 'vette is unique, but a fully restored one is better than letting one rust out and die of "skin cancer."

A "Rice Rocket" is my word for cars like those used in the fast and the furious. Small, imported cars that are super modifed and very fast. They are all unique, and definately flashy.

Also, a lowrider is unique and flashy. I was trying to state that there are many different ways that people express themselves through their cars, just like computers.

Sorry I gave the wrong impression in the first post. I meant for the reader to understand that I was talking about 3 different cars. my bad. I love old cars, and hate to see the true classics *******ized. Now I understand your reaction. (at first I just thought you were tired.):)

I laughed in the movie when they're talking about 10s quarter mile cars, and Vin Diesel says to the guy on a Yamaha R1 motorbike, "You're going to have to bring something other than that crotch rocket".

The Yamaha R1 does sub-10s quarter miles in stock form with a good rider on board, and when modified will get into the mid to low 8's.

Gotta love movies.

Yeah and I really liked the part where that little Mazda blew away that Supercharged and blown Hemi Charger(around 800hp)! That made the whole movie even More stupid!

Dodge can call that 5.7 Litre 345HP motor a HEMI if they want too(its theres to do)but to me, there was and will be only one HEMI.......thats a 426 baby!

This is getting far off topic, but a 440 mag cant even compare to a 426 Hemi IMHO.
But its a very powerful engine ......my dad had a 71' Charger with a 440 Magnum and a 72' with a 383 magnum which he used to scare the living **** out of me on a daily basis in.He also had a 69' with a 440/slapstick with the adjustable torsion bars in front, and he'd jack it all the way up and put cinderblocks in the trunk and see how far he could keep the front off the ground..............that was until his grill decided to become one with that big Oak tree!
