I have enough spare parts to finish my Home Theater machine (finally) and luckily all the parts will fit into a shell I've been meaning to use for a long time...
http://www.planetunreal.com/identitycrisis/cabins/cs/modding/vacuumac.jpg

EDIT - Change of plans: This will be printed onto an acetate sheet or etched into the window that's going where the monitor screen used to be.

Dude, that will be awesome! Makes me want to do something similar, just don't have the money to put into it.

Good luck man!

EDIT - Are you going to use that crappy monitor? Is that even possible? Hmm. So many questions... I'm intrigued... i know i can get an apple II e.

No, that will be a window with a printed image that I haven't decided upon yet.

Nope. It had the OS 7 interface burned into the screen and it was only greyscale.

I'm going to have to order some cable extensions and tomorrow I'll be buying a new Power supply.

The only things I've finished today
- mounting the motherboard to the inside of the shell
- cutting out the window in the rear of the shell
- Taking apart the CD-ROM drive that will be going in this case to allow the CD to be seen through the front window.
- succesfully injuring myself

I was under the impression that all that hardware he listed wouldn't even being to fit into a Classic Mac housing that still had a moniter in it. :(

Anyways, good luck, slug, she'll be a beaut! :D

Thanks for the comments everybody. I now need to wait for some parts to arrive :(

Captain Slug
11-25-02, 05:10 PM
No! I'm out of precious moneys again. This machine really isn't a priority right now so it may not be finished until a friend of mine is interested in buying it. I'm lacking the Power supply, mouse, keyboard, and cold cathode inverter. So that's unfortunately going to bring this project to a screaming hault.

The most I can do right now is finish modding the CD-ROM and get it setup. I'm hoping that some more spare parts will land in my lap. (that happens every now and then).

I'll quit whining now. Once this machine gets built my friend is going to buy it. He's on a REALLY tight budget at the moment and can't save up enough to really upgrade past his current K6-2 300 with integrated video. This machine will atleast be able to play the games he likes.

I'm still getting there. But much slower than anticipated. I'm shopping eGay for cheap parts and if I win those auction I'll only have $25 invested in this machine.
I did finish the CD-ROM mod. I painted the tray silver and removed the upper half so you can see all the innards. Now I need to modify the shell to mount it.

Slow and steady makes the mod...

Hooha! Good/bad news to report.

My Mom's machine kicked the bucket and refused to do all of the things she wants it to do so now I have more parts to work with. I still have things up in the air because out of all these parts, some of them have to end up back with her somehow and the other half need to go to a friend who needs a machine for under $100. I'll figure it out little by little.

So, now I'm probably building a new machine for my mom (she's envious of my faster machines) and I'll have a bundle of spare aprts to work with.

Captain Slug
11-27-02, 08:05 PM
YIPEEEEEEE!!!! I spent all of today working on it and now I just have to add the windows, a few minor details, and then I'll be painting it.

The only part remaining for me to acquire is an inverter for the white Cold cathode tube I have. I haven't invested a penny in this machine yet and $5-$10 to get it finished is alot easier to swallow.

This was done completely by hand and took me upwards of an hour to do with my trust Black & Decker RTX with the etching and sanding bits. Once I can procure an inverter I'll be able to see this lit up INSIDE the shell.

Before ----------------------------------------------> After
http://www.planetunreal.com/identitycrisis/cabins/cs/modding/vacuumac.jpghttp://www.planetunreal.com/identitycrisis/cabins/cs/modding/2_ba2.jpg

Granted I have a really weak digital camera, but it's better than nothing. I lost my window of opportunity for painting the shell myself since the temperature outside dropped to 30f yesterday. I'll be taking the shell to an auto body shop soon so I can have the last detail sorted out (a nice silver paint job).
Aside from paint it's 100% complete. If I wanted to I could hook up the cables and let 'er rip. But, I do not yet know who this machine is going to. Either my friend will be buying it, or it's going in my personal stash, or it will be sold to a currently unknown person.

I have to use a Flex ATX motherboard because I was having a hard time getting processor for the SLot 1 motherboard I was going to use. It also save me a little space since I didn't have to make space for a PCI soundcard and could instead use the onboard audio (which works okay). The only two PCI slots are filled with a TNT2 M64 and a 56K modem. Both are mounted by a custom made Lexan backing plate (urg that took forever).

The CD-ROM drive is kinda naked. I completely removed the top cover and painted the tray silver. You can peep into the front window and see the CD spinning or loading. There was absolutely NO room to gracefully mount a floppy drive, so I just omitted it since I've had alot of problems with floppies getting scrambled (Grrrrr).

All said and done, I think it's the second-lightest machine I've ever built. It weighs in at 10 pounds and measures in at 10 x 10 x 9.

I will add more pics after it's painted. I've done over two weeks of work on this machine and the mounting holes I've cut into the back are a complete work of art. Nothing is hack and slash, nothing is second rate. This is the HARDEST and most labor intensive project I've ever completed.
*phew* :o

I'm working on that. It's hard to hide them when the PSU is hogging almost half of the inside of the case. I also have to keep the cables away from the CD-ROM drive because it's open-air (I tried to make a clear sheild for it but that didn't go all that well).

That or I'll just use different lighting and disable the flash...

It recently snowed so there was a plethora of blueish white light coming through the windows. I will be lighting it inside the case with an 8 inch white cold cathode that I plucked out of a dead scanner.

It has the same connector that my other inverters have, but the inverter inside the scanner is setup to draw more amperage than PSU can feed. So I'm going to need to buy one normally used for inside PCs.

i have an inverter from the first cold cathode i bought. it was from svc. when i got my new cathode, its inverter can power 2 cathodes. if thats the kind of inverter you want, let me know. it would cost next to nothing for me to mail it. that will look great with some light behind it (as soon as you clear up some of the wires). after you have all the power wires you need, why not just open up the psu, and cut out the extra lines you dont need. namagomi just did that on a box he built, and it keeps the inside oh so much cleaner. i dont think you'll be needing the extra molex plugs later. are you really going to be adding anything to that box later? anyway, good luck! cant wait to see it done.

Captain Slug

I don't want to snip lines off the PSU but I could stuff the P4 and P6 connectors inside it. That's what's creating the mess.

As you may notice, there's no intake fan. That' because the fan inside the power supply is kind-of noisy and powerful and is doing a very good job of sucking air in through all of the venting holes in the case. The current temps after running for an hour are still under body temperature.

Thanks. It's freezing here right now and I had to paint it in the garage with the spray can in one hand and a hair dryer in the other.

Digital Pimp has some old Mac shells like mine that he wants to do a similar mod with. You could nag him for one...

Then all you'd need is a nice Flex ATX board. Epox makes one based on the KT133+ chipset (so you could build a very capable gaming rig in one of these shells that would be upgraded with a full size video card).

The outer dimensions of this system are: 14" x 10" x 9.5"
(the inside dimensions are much smaller because of the handle built into the top and the slope in the front of the case)

:D
It does help that this is the 15th case that I've modded. Practice makes perfect I guess.

Everyone needs to keep their eyes peeled! The red neon for this machine will be here next week, and I'll be starting a new "Shoe-Horning" project once the AT parts I'm hoping to get arrive.

I suppose the next step for you is to make a souped-up BBC micro.

1mhz => 2ghz...

Or you could *try* with a ZX spectrum or something :)

Mac users have no taste... (http://cgi.techtv.com/messageboards?action=whole_thread_view&board_id=17&topic_id=62&thread_id=520180)

Quote from an idiot who doesn't know how to mod or how to appreciate one.
"You've gotta be kidding me?! I didn't think it was possible to make a Mac look that bad. Boy, you must be some kind of "genius", huh? "

Naivity is great, isn't it.

That's why I was posting there...
I was actually expecting to ruffle more feathers than this, but I guess I could try posting it in the MacAddict forum (while wearing my flame-retardant suit) :D

I am still unable to find any 9" LCD screens that can produce any kind of image quality good enough to be used with a computer. If anyone wants me to make them one of these all they'd have to do is provide the shell and other parts.

if anyone needs a shell... i may have some if the price is right. ;)

pm me if interested

That is one wicked mod job. You are the man Mr. Slug. The Mac heads in the school district would choke on that one. I wish I had it to stick it to them. Don't get me wrong I like macs but not to the point of being a zealot like they are.
