If the files were completely deleted, Windows would report the space as being unused. Since something is still taking up space, it's possible they were recovered from lost chains.
If that's the case, you can check in the top directory on the disk for files or folders named SOMETHING.001 (I can't remember the default recovered files name off-hand). If they're there, they _might_ still be usable if you rename them.
I don't see any files like that. All the files under E: are only a few GB after I selected them all. But the properties of E: shows there are 55GB data. Specially I even saw some of those video file names when the defragment was moving files on E:

I assume if you do a search for one of the files you don't get any results?
no...
not even a single file
The subfolder which holds all those files are completely empty and it shows 0 bytes...
there are not too many other folders left, so it's easy to look all over the place, but they are not there.....besides all folders total size is only a few GB after I select all.
those my "treasure"......
that's about 850 files.....45GB of them!

Hmm, not sure what to tell ya at this point. You could try Norton Utilities/SystemWorks. It used to have an undelete program that would give you a list of every deleted file that can be recovered. But I haven't used it since the 98 days; I don't know if it works under XP.
Are you using NTFS or FAT32 on these drives?
Norton can do nothing(tried already)...those files are not deleted yet(most of them are still there....invisible....hiding....whatever you call them....as E: shows that in its used space and defragment moving files even showed the files names of them...
I am using NTFS.

As I recall, NTFS has some quirks that can cause it to miss-report free space.
See if this helps at all:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315688
that link from microsoft doesn't help......if my situation is like they described....then it means all my files are actually deleted, but they are not, I saw some of those file names during defragment.
thanks for trying to help me out, Ran-chan :)
I'll need some rest for now...didn't sleep all night for trying to slove this problem.
I'll be back in 6 to 7 hours probably.

the exact same thing happind to me a month or so back il see if i can find the thread again, i used some software that someone recomended and i got all mine back THE EXACT same thing that has happind to you! drive space saiz the data is there but you cannot see it!
It's fixed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure it's Norton Systemworks 2002's DiskDoctor OR EasyRecovery Professional Edition, I ran both.
And there came out a folder called "found.000".
And this found.000 contained many many subfolders with numbers as names. And most(42GB out of the 44GB) my "treasure"(video, mp3) are inside one of those hundreds subfolders. And they still have their original file names :) So basicly I got most important stuff back.
but some games and other software I had in other folders cannot be used any more due to those software and games are made by many many files, and those thousands files are all over the place inside the "found.000", and the names are also changed to numbers. So I don't have the time and I cannot put each of them together again.
anyway, I am happy to have my video and mp3 back... :)
thanks everyone for trying to help me out

Now that you fixed it, open up a 100 pack of CD-Rs and get to work. There is no such thing as a "safe hard drive backup".

lol, I can back it up on the other hard drive and the other computer.
it will take me around 70 CDs to backup that around 45GB data. That's a lot of time ...
Any of you ever done backup data on DVD ?
I heard double-side DVD can hold 9.8GB data, that works for me.

I've backed up stuff to a DVD-RAM for years, but I wouldn't recommend those to anyone. I started burning to DVD-Rs a few weeks ago. But I haven't seen many double-sided DVD-R disks that I felt like paying for. I figure 50 pcs of 4.7G disks for $50 is adequate for backup.

Well the disks I'm using aren't, but you can by RW disks in a cake for about $1.50 a piece.
that's the kind I like :)
thanks for the information
