80GB WD SE's or 120GB maxtors

I have the opportunity to swap out my WD SE's (2 80GB in RAID 0) for two Maxtor 120GB 7200RPM ATA133 drives. I searched for any benchmarkes with these drives in a RAID array, but I didnt find anything. I want to know if I will at least see the same speed as my current setup (who wouldnt mind more space at the same speed)

if i were you, i'd keep the 8mb cache SE's as i have noticed no
difference between my maxtor ata 133 and a my other ata 100

imho i would take maxtor over wd any day, but i havn't seen any benchmarks... its kind of like that which is better? pentium or athlon? lol, in this case i think maxtor, good luck in making a decision.

I am not looking for a seed increase. If the speed of the maxtors will turn out the same as the WD's, then I will use the Maxtors and get extra space.

why dont u get the new maxtor 8mb ata133 drives? those should be some sweet drives, and their 200gb has it, dunno if 250 does but it woulud be nice :)

I got them for $100 each, Compusa has the same sale price right now, but it is after a couple mail in rebates. A store nearby had them marked $100 ( I believe in error) without any rebates.

Yea, I walked into the store to get a smaller drive that was on sale (MIR) and some guy standing there pointed out to me that they had the 120's for $99. I then had to really think about it. The tag on the box said $179, the tag on the shelf said $99. I had an employee do a price check and it came up $99, my mind was made up at that point. I was originally getting a drive for the new computer I am building for my parents, they certainly don't need 120 gigs, so I still have to decide what I want to do

You could tell something was up with the pricing at this store because the 80 gig was $140 and the 120 gig right next to it was only $99.

In some senses I can use the space. I do video captures in uncompressed format @ 640*480 before I edit the video and compress it. I don't always have time to compress the files right away so I have these huge files (13 gigs for 30 min of video) cluttering my system and at that rate space goes pretty quickly.

I was getting by with the space that I had, but since the drives were a good deal I figured I would go for it. And since I prefer RAID...I needed two of them. I will probably end up selling some drives (and using others for computers that I am building for people right now) after I determine the setup I want to go with. My suspicion is that the WD SE drives are the best single drives, but the performance is limited ( and negates the 8MB cache) when you use them in a RAID setup. I am going to do a comparison between a couple different drive configurations and I will post the information.

i need lots of space. planning on getting two more 120gig maxtors myself and then two of the 250gig or the 320gig ones depending how mich they are.

They had a WD 120 for $80 at Circuit City, but I missed out.

I'd go with the maxtor, its a lot more space, and probably no noticable decline in performance.
