I have a Gateway Profile w/ a 930mhz PIII and 128MB RAM, runing 2K Pro, whats the best way to give it a good performance kick?
More RAM. Definitely, 128MB is not enough IMO for Windows 2000. You should have at least 256MB for decent performance.

i would suggest go with winxp pro than w2k pro. I used both... but w2k xp use less RAM and it is as stable as w2k...

I assume that you cannot overclock the computer, since you are not asking about how to do that. I agree with Yakbak, you really need at least 256MB of RAM for W2K. Also, look in the Task Manager and see how many processes are running. Do you need all of them to be running? Be careful with this one if you don't know what you are doing.

thanx man i'll check it out
It's mostly a listing of services that you can shut down. I noticed a definate performance increase when I tweaked my box. :)

The usual: defrag, lowest video settings possible, keep the system tray empty, etc.
2000 will be much faster than XP with 128mb, but the ram upgrade to 256 is the biggest, most cost effective one going...
As far as system tweaks, you are limited to BIOS options and killing unused services: I turn them off, but leave the default startup type while I am testing: after I find out if I do use something I put things in 2 categories: mandatory and manual.
Mandatory is NEED for the os to run, manual is stuff that I only need for certain things that I don't do all the time 9many of these will start the service on demand.)
I disable everything I can.
