hi

i am getting an asus a7v333 mobo and a seagate barracuda 7200RPM 40GB hd. i already have a 5400RPM hd. is there any way to connect both of them without the 7200 one running at 5400?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

5400 and 7200 are measures of RPM (revolutions per minute) which depends only on the spindle motor in the drive.

You can hook up 7200 and 5400 drives any way you wish: the 5400 will still spin at 5400rpm and the 7200 at 7200rpm.

if you put them in any raid then thats a total waste of the 7200 advantage, i put two 5400 and 7200 WD 10 gigs in RAID 0 and then i installed windows and it would stutter alot because the 5400 has to keep up with the faster seek times from the 7200 model, and then the 7200 would spend a few milliseconds(every millisecond counts in the hdd world) waitin for the 5400 to find the other half of the file i requested, and that seemed to cause alot of stuttering. wasnt fun. i would recomend keeping then on different IDE channels, avoid putting them in any raid array togather.

best bet is to put one hd and one cd/dvd on each channel.
