I used to have Mcafee virus protection but I never updated it because I didn't want to pay for the updates. A got Norton Anti-Virus 2000 for free so I decided I would use it instead of Mcafee because the updates are free. Then somebody told me that 2000 is no good and you have to buy a new every year. Is this true?

For all norton AV products, you need to renew a subscription each year. I've found that I usually end up formatting my comp around the same time, and reinstalling is possible; hence you can use it longer than a year, except you need to reinstall NAV, windows, or both.

Ok, thanks. They told me 2000 was worthless because you can't get updates for it anymore. And that I would have to buy 2003.

You can still get updates for it. They're full of crap :)
