I have an ABIT KG7-RAID mainboard with the latest bios. ABIT says the max CPU this mainboard can take is the XP2100+ on the Palomino core or a 2000+ on a Tbred core.

Any opinions out there as to which would actually perform better, or would they be virtually identical. I have 1GB of Crucial DDR2100 registered memory in the mainboard, I do not overclock and I have a Zalman 5000+ heatsink/fan.

Currently the socket is occupied by a 1.4Ghz Tbird.

Thanks for your help.

No overclocking: any XP 2100 better than any XP 2000.
With overclocking: T-Bred much better than Palomino.

BTW I thought I read Ed Stroligo say 1800+ T-Bred B (not available yet) OC's as much as 300MHz faster than 1800+ T-Bread A (with high end cooling of course).

What I want to know is 1800+ T-Bred A vs Palomino 2100+?

First, 2100+ palomino - Yes for non-overclocking (runs faster!)

Yes, the "B" revision code chips will definitely overclock better, but only time will tell how much better...

See my sig for the answer to your question.

Hm. So T-Bred A 1800+ with same cooling as Palomino 2100+ can easily make up the 200MHz handicap @ start. Wow.

P.S. You do mean with any cooling, right?

the T-bred would run much cooler and overclock better should you choose to do so
i doubt, though, that you'd be able to find one for sale right now. :burn:

yes, air or water cooling about the same (watercooling really only helps reduce the high noise level common in most high-end air cooling)

Go for the retail if you're getting the 1700+ for $7 more you get a heatsink (Put it on an old pentium 1 chip for ****s and giggles.) the case sticker (dont ask me why you'd want this but people sell em on ebay for $3.) 3 year warrantee (if you dont overclock). Ummm Installation guide. (hang it on your wall and call it a poster). And warrantee info. (Makes a nice coaster while you are running your cpu at 212 fsb and 2.25 volts)

Oh yeah but if you aren't overclocking go for the 2100+

Sure did:
"A typical TBredB should do about 300MHz more than a TBred A, or about 2.3GHz vs. 2GHz with high-end air. That's the difference."

c627627, i meant a 2000+ T-bred
heck i might pick me up one of those 1800+ t-breds
either that or a 2400+

got me an old a7v kt133 board tho so it'll run 33% slower whatever i get

then i'll just undervolt it and have a silent cool running machine for seti, nat server, file server, and some games of course

i'll get me a new board next year maybe, old stuff is fun too ;) :burn:

Well I believe you and I would buy a T-bred over Palomino to OC.
But explain this one if you would pls:
AMD Athlon XP “Thoroughbred” 1800+: Hardly Overclockable Athlon XP Processor With Unlocked Multiplier (http://xbitlabs.com/news/story.html?id=1038666951)

The xbitlabs.com article says: "The guys only managed to get it stable at 1800MHz (2200+ model) with 1.70V and nothing more. Not the greatest result I have seen, but still a performance gain for free."

So, according to them, if you can end up with 2200 speeds with 1800 T-Bred, doesn't it stand to reason that you can OC Palomino 2100 higher than 2200+ speed?

EDIT: They just edited the original article... it was an older stepping T-Bred...
