I am having a problem with the IDE devices on a computer im building (its my first)
I have swapped the PSU and it didnt fix anything.
Here are my problems:
IDE drive doesnt properly read what it has on it.
CD-Rom drive wont read boot disks properly
Folppy wont read boot disks properly

I tried to load windows 95 onto the computer. I formatted the hard drive (i got it to read a boot disk once) as a fat 32 (its a wD cavear(sp?) at 17 gig) I coulnt load win 95 properly. I had been having problems detecting the hard drive, i dont have this problem anymore. It used to read the boot disks, it wont anymore. Iv tried switching PSUs and that didnt fix it (one was an allied, the other generic, neither good ones but they were 350 watts, plenty of power for the system.
Specs:
Duron 950mhz
PNY 128 MB pc100/133 SDRAM
OEM (Micron) nVidia Vanta 16MB (TNT 2 Rivea GPU)
17 gig WD Cavere
44x CDrom drive (dont have name off the top of my head)
ECS K7S5A motherboard. (audio, modem, and ethernet activated)

If anybody knows whats wrong pleas post how to fix it, if you have some spare time and are good with troubleshooting please ICQ me at 128443362, or AIM me at Zerileous (when adding me to ICQ make sure you specify your reason or i wont authorize you due to not knowing your reason)

Thanks.

In that you are having problems with both IDE and floppy, your problem is not likely to have anything to do with your drives.

I would suspect either the cables or the mobo. The first thing is to re-seat all your cables and make sure that they are in tight. After that, check your IDE drives to see if they are properly set up as master and slave.

There is a minor possibility of your mobo being bad but it is always best practice to rule out the things that are free before assuming the worst.

Righteo mate, been there done that, Just as an FYI they are running on seperate channels (HDD one prime, CD-Rom on second) Im seriously suspecting mobo, another reason is that the front pannel connectors do not follow the manual for the mother board (had to do a trial and error) and even then i can only get the power on light and the power button to work (no hdd light). One lesson i will take out of this project is that procrastinating fixing a problem will only cost you money as parts will be beyond their RMA period.

I can be as lazy as I want... nothing in my case has under a 3 year warranty except my 2 year warranty video card.

Just a thought.. Did the 95 disk come with an OEM computer? If it did it might only install on the computer you bought that it came with.

no, its not from an OEM, its worked on other computers(along time ago before upgrades)

You could also have bad RAM. I would remove all cards except video, disconnect the hard drive and CDROM, and see if you can boot up on the floppy.

If you can, then add parts back in one at a time until you can't boot. Then, you will have identified the culprit.

If it won't boot as above, then it must be either the CPU, Mobo, RAM or PSU. Try them in another computer if possible to identify further.
