This walks the line. I don't think it can be here.

Just keep it clean, alright?

We just like to be better safe than sorry here. I know it wasn't your question, but threads like this have a tendancy to go to hell rather quicly.

I had to put that warning there, it's my job :)

The mods and stuff dont like Emulator talk because no one knows if you really have the ROms and what not. If you speak nothing of it, it should be okay.

yeah.. so anyone actually use an emulator here?

Most emulators have a "Wait For V-Sync" option. Enable it. That sould help if your computer is too fast.

Btw, emulators are not considered illegal. Remember Atari vs. Coleco? Sony vs. Connectix? Bleem? What about all the commercial OS emulators in use? The only thing illegal is having roms/programs that run on said emulator without actually owning it. Its pretty much the same with PC software. You dont own it, you souldn't have it. But just because I own a PC, doesn't mean I souldn't be able to use Mac software. I have 3 dead PS units and plenty of games that were doing nothing but gathering dust. Am I about to go out and spend another $50 for a PSOne, or more for a PS2, just to get another unit that will probably die again because I look at it funny? Not when theres plenty of emulators available for free that will let me play my favorite games at ridiculously high resolutions on my PC.

Corrected the Atari vs. part.

to Lt.Max - what emulator are you using. ePSXe, bleem, vgs?

oh and to add my say - what makes emulator illegal is when the programmers reverse engineer hardware to improve their emu's. none of the psx emu's have done that though - so its perfectly legal.

Reverse compiling of software is a no-no. Reverse compiling of hardware is kinda up in the air somewhere, since most specifications for chips, dsps, cpus, etc, are readily available from the manufacturers. Its kinda hard to reverse compile hardware anyway.

It is perfectly legal to download and have a copy of a non-commercial (freeware) emulator, or to purchase a commercial/shareware emulator. It is illegal to download or have a copy of a program that is meant to run on that emulator unless you own the original.

are you telling me sony have the specs for the psx hardware up on their site making it easy to code an emulator? hell no, they dont, and neither do any of the other console makers AFAIK
i yes its kinda hard - but not impossible. ideed there are some people doing it right now tih a certain discontinued console. but im not going to be talking about that (legal reasons)

Sonys PS used hardware very similiar to certain arcade hardware. Not only that, the bios was used as a starting point, since it contained alot of vital information as to how the PS unit worked. Certain chips in the PS were also very similiar to others which did have data specs available. But to this date, there is no 100% PS compatible emulator available. If the programmers were able to reverse compile the hardware, we wouldn't need PS units anymore. Nor would emulators like Mame have constant updates. :p

Programming a game console/arcade emulator isn't as simple as just cpu + sound + video = emulator, or hooking up some magical machine and seeing just how the board works with the program. Even with the data available on the chips, there is still plenty of trial and error trying to get it to work. But once programmers had information on how a certain chip worked (68000, Z80, TMS32013, V70, etc), it helped others with thier work greatly.

Most other consoles before the PS were also based on readily available chips. Probably the hardest part is figuring out how those chips communicate and interact with one another.

And if your talking about the Dreamcast, its a Hitachi SH4 processor with a PowerVR graphics chip from NEC. I forgot what the unit for the sound is, and most of the emulators aren't anywhere near completion because of the complexity of the hardware. They know whats under the hood to an extent. But even if someone did make an emulator, I think a P4 2.8G+ would be needed just to run it. The Dreamcast was so far advanced and technically better then a PS2. But like the Saturn, the game support and marketing just wasnt there.

Now if you'll excuse me, I feel like playing Gran Turismo @ 1024x768.

ok while in the game press delete to bring the graphics menu up (and also the frame-rate counter)

next keep pressing end until you cycle through and select the proper frame-rate (50 or 60)

when you press end it cycles through like this
frame limit off >> custom frame limit >> auto frame limit (the one you want)
