Ok so I have a P4 2.4 and I stripped off the thermal tape and replaced it with AS2. I ran MBM and Prime95, and got temps of 45C idle, 60C load. This is with NO overclock. Well, I thought, may as well bite the bullet and get a new HSF. So I bought a Thermalright AX-478 and Panaflo 39.6cfm fan and installed them. Guess what? NO temp difference. I read the thread about IT7's reading temps high, but this all relative. Why didn't I get any gains from installing those two? I installed the fan with the logo down (blowing air onto the HS).

The only thing I can think of is I could lap the HS more...I did it for about 5 minutes but I guess I could get it smoother....

Nevertheless, I have overclocked to a modest 2.7 (2.8 caused a reboot in RTCW).

Any pointers?

Just a couple to throw at 'ya.
Make sure it's sitting on the cpu correctly. Hold the board up to the light and see if you can see light between the two.
Try lapping the h/s.
Try switching the fan to suck air.
Make sure to take the time and read how to set MBM to read your board properly.
You may know these thing's, but I thought I would offer them.
Good luck.

How am I going to see under it with the bracket in the way?
I'll do more lapping tonight and try switching the fan.
I'm pretty sure I have MBM set up correctly. I got the advice on how to do it here. I just haven't calibrated it, which doesn't matter since I'm talking all relative here.

thanks

Hey kripes,
1 more thing is to make sure the case is getting plenty of fresh air to cool that new heatsink :)

good luck with it!

It sounds like your mobo isn't reporting temps correctly. I had a version of Asus probe that shipped with mine and it always read 49 degrees no matter what. See if you can find another method of checking your temps.
