View Full Version : Get IE to download more than two things at once...

It would appear in IE there is a limit that allows only 2 downloads to work at any time. If you are downloading some files, you can only do two at once...not three at once. The third one just sits there doing nothing until one of the others is done...
Is there any registry tweak to change this? Would be nice to not have that limitation...it's just sorta annoying...
Mike
I didn't think that IE had this limitation. I've been able to get at least 4 simultaneous downloads before. I don't remember if I've ever attempted more. It could be the site you're downloading from, or possibly your setup?
Who knows.

I don't know what version of IE you are using to limit to 2 downloads. I remember IE6 has a 4 download limit, bit there IS a registry tweak, but I can't remember it off hand.
Check www.tweakxp.com I'm sure I saw it on there somewhere. Alternatively, use a download manager like Download accelerator Pro. I don't know how I lived without that program.
Breadfan, why not use download manager like Flashget (they download way faster, and u can set how many downloads, limit the speed, etc)

Cool thanks for the tips guys...I'm on dialup actually, so I've never come across this problem...my friend Riachard wanted to know and I remembered something about a registry tweak but couldn't remember what it was...

Breadfan, I haven't tried this in XP but I know for a fact that adding the following key will allow you to modify the number of simultaneous downloads in Windows 95/98 and Millenium.
Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings]
Value Name: MaxConnectionsPerServer, MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: Number of Simultaneous Connections
Hope this helps you out.

Well I think he's using Win2k, not sure what IE version though, I'll pass that registry bit to him, and a suggestion to get IE 6 installed...
Thanks!

Use Opera, www.opera.com it allows you to set how many connections per server & total connections in options. (note: it is commonly limited to two simultaneous connections to limit server load..). Pages load alot faster if you have more than 2 connections open though. This limit has been around as long as I can remember. Back when IE3 was around, you could only do 1 thing at a time, surf or download.

I do not think IE has a d/l limit. What you may be experiencing is that the server that he is downloading from only allows 2 connections at once.

you're right... i just downloaded 8 things at once last night... they were ms flight sim 2002 planes... the server/my connection is slow at night so it takes a while... maybe the older versions do, but i know mine doesn't...

Back in the good 'ol days of IE4, I remember distinctly that it wouldn't let me download more than 2 things at once.
DAP solved this :D (And made my D/Ls go Sooo much quicker)
My IE6.0 has the same restriction.. Only 2 downloads from the same server at any one time.. I can have more downloads running, but then from different servers. And yes, the restriction is in IE. But a download manager fixed that..

ah well from the same server is a little different... that makes sense... i think i can make due with 2 per server... i always figured when i tried to d/l more than a couple from a server that my isp or the server just had too much traffic to connect for the extra download... good to know... i will have to "shop around" for a good download manager... anybody have any suggestions?

If you try to download more than 2 things at a time from a http server, it will queue them, and they will sit waiting to connect.
I occasionally use Getright, www.getright.com as my download accelerator. (generally only when pulling down linux ISOs or such, i find that with broadband I can wait a few seconds longer for something smaller than that to download sans a download manager.

I use DAP - as i said.
got to www.download.com, and it's the fifth item in the 'Most Talked About' list. (bottom right)
Works wonders!
10/10!

Ah-HEM. I think it's the server he's downloading from that limits the number of downloads. Most servers only allow 4 downloads per user; some limit to 2 and some only allow 1 to limit bandwidth usage.

I believe the limit is generally on the client side. The server side has a general limit of allowing X number of connections total. But it all depends on what software you use for client and server.
No matter where I try to download some files, the limit is two files. Since I'm on ISDN it takes a while...
Downloading drivers from various manufacturers, freeware from various sites or whatever, the limit is still two files..
