Look at the results from the poll over at the [H]. It's b/c of these idiots that we have to register with M$ (why I stuck with 2k) and are so concerned about M$ snooping on our comps.

Hope an a mod doesn't lock this one too. Yes, it is unfair that honest users like us (some of us anyway) have to deal with activation because of others partaking in illegal activities.

Let's not let this thread degenerate into something against the rules. It's ok right now, just don't let it slip.

Yes, things like this show why Microsoft is doing what it's doing w/ XP. But we have to remember that MS is within it's right to do it. Afaik, XP only sends MS usage information. Statistics and stuff, not info on the stuff you have stored.

Is there a way it can be stoped ? I mean other than not having the internet ?

besides a statistic and a small gripe on my part, the reason for this thread being on thin ice eludes me. :eh?:

Unless something bad was to happen.

EDIT: This poll gives M$ even more of a right to charge us more. 50% is a lot.

yes you can stop sending the stats back to ms.....

Just disable it from Administrator tools -> Service -> Error Reporting Service.

Also.... I have a legitimal copy of WinXP via attending one of MS seminar.... however, i uses the MOD version of WinXP so that every time my HD corrupts.... or new Hardware added or change my Mobo, I don't have to call MS to activate my WinXP again.

Today I just swap my 8kha+ to 8rda+ and after I boot into windows, It prompts a msg ask me if I want to record my Hardware setting stats etc and send to MS for furture activation blah blah blah..... that irriates me alot.

I am a programmer/ administrator and I tried to respect copy right always. but this activation scheme really brothers me alot.

I admit that I can't think of any other way for MS to stop piracy by activation. It seems logical but I still think they need to work on a few details, I mean why do I have to activate the software AGAIN if I'm reinstalling it on the SAME machine?

my problem is... from time to time.. I have to reinstall.... and also... I upgrade my hardware.... Ghost 7 is a big help... it save time reinstalling... but what about upgrading hardware? sometimes I swap cards just between PCI slots, the MS activiation menu will pop out again. This is just super annoying.

Yes, it can be stopped. Unfortunately, the methods are a bit too unsavoury to be discussed in this forum.

wow. almost 53%? That's even larger than I thought it would be. My uni sells copies of WinXP Pro to students for 30 bucks. 30 bucks for SP1 and being able to sleep at night? Sure thing, I say :D

It amusing that MS thinks it can stomp out piracy. That's like trying to beat evolution. CD keys were suspoed to stop it, and that didn't happen. Then activation was suspoed to stop it, and well, the numbers speak for themselves on that one.

It reminds me of the unofficial slogan we made for Quakecon2k2
"800 Computers, 3 CD Keys"

P.S. - I hope nobody is getting the impression that 53% of ALL copies of WinXP are illegal. That's like asking street racers if they break the speed limit or not - it just comes with the territory.

Oh, thats all it is ? :) and i've also got a question :) I've got windowsXP pro, it only needs thecd key of course but i havent had to activate it, is it only xp home that needs to be avtivated ?...dont mind me... i just woke up and havent had much sleep.

erm. youve got a cracked copy of winxp. thats WAREZ bro. ILLEGAL.

that was a bad move

heres a tip: both winxp HOME and PROFESSIONAL have to be activated.

ONLY winxp Coperate doesnt need activation. that only needs a cd key. It is also not generally available to the public, and is very expensive if it is.

anyway,back on topic.

to be honest, it seems like it has more to do with microsoft's wanting to control every last damn thing, rather than cracked copies, though people using cracking copies really dont help the matter much

I think it's alot of flak for a legitimate customer to go through. By accidentally swapping too much hardware, you have to get Microsoft's PERMISSION to continue using your licenced copy.

yeh, i admit....calling microsoft to activate my xp pro sucks but having all the screen pop ups and such when installing new hardware doesnt happen here....disabled all that junk....waste of my time....it looks like you all need a look at tweak xp website......both my xp pro and home edition sometimes work with cd key and sometimes need to call microsoft.......what i hate the most is that i have kids that tend to abuse the cds and would like to make copies of all my LEGAL copies but most wont (or maybe i aint doing it right).....i feel i should be able to copy my LEGAL copies of software and such for backup reasons.....thats what sucks!!!!

Well if you didn't destroy, and i mean turn to ashes, that would make 2 copies of the program, but only 1 was payed for...so, it would still be illegal

But i think this thread is getting a bit on the bad side....so im not gonna post on this thread nemore :|

:eh?:

When did that change? I tend to destroy my CDs so I make & use one backup copy so that I don't kill my originals, and when I do end up destroying it, i can just make a new one. (yes, i should get jewel cases.. )

XP pro does not require activation, that's what I run, and it never asked me for that....I think I got it about the time it was first coming out...maybe I have an older version?? I do agree about that whole privacy business. I don't know how many of you guys use firewalls, but you should get like zonealarm or tiny personal firewall. I use zonealarm and it works great, I do have the MS one enabled, but I guess I'm not trusting of large monopolistic corporations. Either way, I downloaded zonealarm, and it launched, and right at bootup, thankfully I was not connected the net, but it caught like two different things wanting to accept connections from the net, one was Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. In fact I just looked at the log, and it's got it recorded in there numerous times, what is the deal with that? Either way, I've got this firewall on, and am considering the other one I mentioned as well. Even though there may be software piracy going on, that will always happen, and I'm just somewhat concerned about microsoft snooping around our computers, b/c they say they only gather statistics, but who's to say what they are not telling you? Just my 2 cents.

Btw, in case you were wondering, that actual filename is svchost.exe found in system32 folder under your windows directory. It said it was trying to send a "UDP datagram" whatever that is, how odd that after that stuff was all blocked, the computer runs perfectly normal.....:)
