Like the title says... RIP 60gig 60gxp. She served for almost a year. The diagonistic tests pronounce it dead. :( :(
The drive had been acting up lately, but I was thinking that maybe it was a lack of power since my 5v line was at 4.84 or so. Could this cause the drive to die prematurely?
I'm going to rig up an old AT powersupply to run my fans and drives so that I won't have this problem again.
Anyone know if I can RMA a drive if its been used for 11 months and about 10 days?

RangerJoe's GXP today, too. maybe you guys got some of the same batch? ;)
I'd reccomend getting an RMA as fast as possible, as with IBM selling it's HDD's manufacturing, the RMA process might get messy in the near future.
That drive should have a three year warranty on it, I recently had to check on the warranty of both my IBMs as I thought one was failing.
Do a search for IBM hard disk warranty on Google and you should find the page that gives all the warranty info on their Deskstar line.

My mom's died yesterday...she was pretty upset. I got her 60GB WD in place of it at best buy.

Be aware that I have had some problems with Maxtors hardrives lately. NOT ONLY did they send me new ones, without question, I DROPPED two of the new ones before I had them installed. I offered to pay for the replacement, Maxtor said, send them back, NO CHARGE, hey ya can't beat that for customer service folks!
impressive.... is a WD600JB any good? (that's the drive with the 8 mb cache right?)

Yep. The JB is the one with 8mb cache. And it's the fastest drive out there.
ooh cool --i might get one soon, especially if this 60gxp dies on me (i'm hoping :P)

If that's the 72rpm 80GB hd w/ 8MB cache, I have one of those Maxtor drives. Just installed it 2 weeks ago.
It is actually noticably faster than the maxtor 7200 rpm 40GB 2MB cache drive I had in there. Win2k boots quite faster. Programs seem to load faster. It's also much quieter. Good drive.
An IBM bought 11 months ago DOES have a 3-year warranty so you should be fine. However, if you don't have a spare, it could be a bit of a pain waiting for the new drive to arrive...

OMG! SHEZ BACK FROM THE DEAD!
I checked it one last time last night after about 4 hrs of pronouncing it dead, and its working fine. I didn't even open the case. What gives?
It could possible be overheating, so I'm going to move one of my case fans to blow over it. The only other thing that I can see, is it being underpowered, so I'm giving it its own dedicated powersupply.
If I power the hard drive on, then turn on the rest of the computer, will it still work right? anyone know?

btw... working fine means i had to do a low level format and reinstall
That's interesting. My 75 did the samething. But after a couple of days the badsectors were back and the drive died again.
Anyway, shipped them back to ibm and then sent me 120s as replacements after some convincing.

I have rma'ed one drive through IBM, it was a 40gb and I got a 60 back. This RMA was caused by a friend of mine hooking the power connector up backwards. He brought it to me and I looked at it and it turned out a molex connector would go in both ways so IBM rma'ed it. I was surprised. I have 8 of this drives total in a few of my computers, ranging from the 75gxp to the 120gxp and I have never had a problem with them. I did buy a couple off ebay that were sold as DEAD and had the same symptoms your drive had FunkDaMonkMan. I don't know what caused it, but I did a low level format and never had a problem since.

I had to rma 60gxp after a month, and they sent me back a 120 gxp in its place. I recieved the new drive the same month it was manufctured. It's been in use now about 11 months.
