hey guys was messing around with my roomates p2 233Mhz machine trying to get him anything out of it we could so i told him i would see about over clocking ..couldnt find any jumpers on the board but ewas abel to do it through software...think it works...ran sandr soft and it said it was moving faster.....ANYways i got it at 280 for now jsut to see hwo it likes being overclocked , but heres the question ...with a stock intel heatsink no fan how high can i overclock it before extra cooling comes into play and what would be the simpiliest and cheapest method i have a sh*t load of extra fans laying aroudn so jsut thinking about rigging one up...gotta lvoe being broke and in college....let know thanks

P2-233's are not multiplier locked, the multiplier is set through jumpers on the MB or in the cmos (almost always jumpers in those days). You can raise the multiplier in addition to rasing the fsb should it help.

How high will it run on the stock cooler? Try it and tell us. Nobody else has your chip to try. They are all different.

The stock hsf should genrally take you almost as far as the chip wants to go. Clock it as high as you can with it being stable. The chip will be fine.

OC it until it wont start windows. Then back down. That's your max OC speed. It's pretty hard to damage the CPU cause it will just lock up if u go too high. Even if U ruin it, a replacement will cost about 2 bucks. I have at least one of those I will give you.

My Pent 2-350 ran at 504 but I kept it at 467 and the sucker still is running today 4 yrs later with a crappy OEM HSF.

PII 350 @ 464 still running at the house. (atleast I think...)

AFAIK, P2s ARE multiplier locked. At least upwards anyway.

If it's an early 233 like mine the multiplier is not locked and can be changed. With the stock passive cooler from Gateway I can set mine at 4.5*66fsb =300, a multiplier of 5 is too much and the system posts at a fail-safe 133mhz. My Intel 440LX motherboard offers nothing for overclocking the FSB but I can use SoftFSB overclocking software to run up to 329mhz stable. I think I could go higher but my crappy generic PCI modem gets flaky with higher bus speeds. My case had no fans except the power supply so I added a $5 80mm exhaust fan in the back of the case.

If you are using a 440LX chipset check out "Bills AL440LX Installation guide".

not sure how to put a link here but it is

All P2-233's and 266's are not locked. The earlier (2.8V) P2-300's are not locked either. The SL2E8 2.0V P2-300's are locked, as are all 2.0V P2's.

that link is dead any other place you can point me....im pretty sure its that chipset and its in a gateway so its probally that board....i tried going into the config mode in the bios to change the the speed but i cant change the multiplier like im use to with modern boards so if you could help me alil out there i would appreciate it thank you all

I'll try again.

If it the same ancient Gateway I'm using (G6-233 1997 vintage) there is a jumper(J8B2) you have to move before you can change the multiplier in the bios config mode then put the jumper back to normal to start the system. You might also go to the Gateway download site and get the 4A4LL0X0.15A.0017.P14 Bios. I had to flash this one before I could use a higher multiplier. There's lots of good info at Bills 440lx site if my link works this time. One more thing I found is you CAN use a Geforce2 class graphics card even though the 440LX chipset does not support AGP spec 2.0. Just use an older Nvidia driver (I'm using the 14.10 WQHL) the newer drivers only caused sporadic system lock-ups.

Good luck with that old rig.
